I'm waiting over 6 weeks for a drain pump for my Duet. I cannot wait any longer. I am buying a new w/d, but I need some input from you all. Whirlpool and Sears are made in Germany. The new Maytag, China. LG, Korea. Is there any front loader made in the USA? I would think parts would be easier to get. How about the new GE front load machine? I need a washer with an internal heater. Thanks in advance to you all.

How old is your Duet? Certainly don't go buying a new washer without raising highest hell with WP, especially if it's under warranty. Go through the 800 number and keep asking to speak to everyone's supervisor. Don't go out and spend your good money on a new washer just because WP has some idiots in service. Demand a loaner, if necessary. Make them take care of you as a customer. Tell them you are reporting this on the internet at the appliance discussion groups like Laundry room forum and epinions.com, but please don't mention us by name. Threaten them with calling the television station(s) in your area that has a consumer reporter. Let them know that you can give back just what they tried to push onto you. Tom

Don't give up on Whirlpool, I bought a new Whirlpool Gold washer and after 1 week it caught fire. The transmission had leaked and caused the motor to overheat and then shut down. They insisted I have the machine repaired according to company policy. I insisted that they either replace it with a new one or a full refund. It went back and forth for a month, but I finally won out and recieved a full refund! I did have to speak to about 9 different peope until it was resloved!

Leon-I agree with Tom. Get on the so called "Whirlpool Cool Line" and start in! They must have sent the replacement pump via Parcel Post, which we "kamaaina" know is code for the Slow Boat. I know this is the american version of a third world country, but you would think a huge outfit like Whirlpool could get a part out for one of their premier products a bit quicker than that.
Anyway, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag? Wheres the choice? In each instance they are building the machines overseas and each one has customers that can tell horror stories. I mean, I know you are mad at Whirlpool right now, but its not like Maytag or GE are so vastly superior. Maybe its time to look into Miele or Asko...
Also, when I bought my Hettie, I waited 3 freakin weeks for it to get shipped from Honolulu, so you could choose something else and still be sitting with no washer. There are a lot of reasons to live here-availabilty of goods and services is not one of them.

I think the only front loaders built in the US are Frigidaire. There is a new model out with a heater. But I agree with everyone else...make Whirlpool make good on your machine.

I had a friend of mine that had trouble with a WP dryer in a duet set, she raised enough hell with them, they gave in and now she has a new one. There are also lemon laws with applances. After three repairs in the first year, in my state, they are required to replace it.

I wonder about this. Some companies are using "made in America" to cover up for stuff like made in Saipan in slave-shops where women are routinely forced to get abortions if they get pregnant and so on (go look this up I'm not kidding, do keyword search "Abrahmoff" and "Saipan" to find the stuff) .

Finding a better washer today, is like trying find a better lawyer in the middle of a lawsuit. Every one has issues and it doesn't matter where they are made. I live on the main land and I continue to hear wonderful reviews from the Duet/HE. I used to work for a manufacturer and being on the answering end of customer service, I know there is little reward in helping a jerk. When I have an issue, I call over and request help, like I would if my dog was just run over. If I don't get a compassionate response, I call back. When I finally get the connect I need, I am solicitous, grateful and friendly. Humor is a great benefit. Soon I sense the shift and the customer service rep is working with me. If the process is stalling, then I begin to say, my friend told me to call the attorney general, the local TV station, the blog world etc and as one friend to another ask if any of that will help. No matter how mad you are, the person on the phone didn't cause the problem and they are your only link to the one who can solve it. Think of it as customer service foreplay and if you want to reach a "mutual" payoff, nice works.

Encouraging the customer service agent to help you normally works....
as an ex holiday rep and manager, I had the opinion that the ones I would help were the ones who were courteous and understanding. Manners cost nothing and thats how I deal with things.... "Customer foreplay" is a great analogy!

When I was working in the second-hand appliance shop, we seldom had complaints - even one repair call would eat the whole profit.
So we paid close attention to our work.
The few problems we did have, however, were prioritized by a grouchy (ok, bitchy) secretary who scheduled them by a simple system: If the customer was rude to her, they were last on the list.
I think this is a universal.
As far as the US made stuff goes, it is sad but true - American companies don't give a plug nickel for their employees or their customers. I just returned a WP Duet 9400 after using it for 2 days. I did only 2 loads of laundry, 1 load of towels and 1 load of whites, and it already smelled of mildew so I ran a Sanitary Cycle. This cycle is 1 hr 55 minutes long and when it was almost 2/3 through the cycle I was downstairs and happened to glance into the laundry tubs and the water coming out of the WM looked gray and very cloudy. I grabbed a clean canning jar and saved a sample.
I immediately called WP and they said it had to be my water which sort of took me by surprise that they would take this attitude. So I ran a Clean Machine Cycle on my old WM and saved a sample of the rinse water which was clear with just a bit of soap and then got a sample of the hot/cold water direct from the same faucet that the WMs use and both were crystal clear.
I took all my water samples to Best Buy. Best Buy immediately gave me a full refund and picked up the 9400 2 days later.
Does anyone know what could make the rinse water turn this opaque gray color.

Sweettalking the customer service people is the only way to go. if you rant and rave like a maniac, you'll never get anything. I buy all HewlettPackard electronics and i love them. With the large amount of their product i have, i sometimes run into a problem. No worries, i just call up HP and have a friendly conversation with the reps....and as long as you're polite and tell them your problem and be very educated about the issue at hand to possibly correct their mistakes, while still being nice, they'll help you. I can't tell you how many free replacement parts or discounted sources HP has given me.
Don't yell, and if the person on the phone won't help you, just hang up and call back, you'll almost never get the same person.

Yes, I ran an empty cycle right after they delivered it. I used Tide HE abt a TBL and Oxy Bleach abt a tsp. I was out in the driveway when they unloaded the machine and it was in a cardboard box. The first load, Tide HE and Oxy Bleach, was a White load. The 2nd load, Tide HE, were several towels, a few shirts and 1 pair of pants and a few other things I can't remember now but it was a small load and nothing that has not been washed many times, so no reason for any color bleeding.
Hmmm, beats me at the moment.
Perhaps the drum bearing was failing prematurely, and the gray discoloration was from the black moly bearing grease leaking out?

Personally, though, if I were looking for a replacement for my Neptune pair, I'd be considering the GE FL Adora, or the Affinity. Both are non-tilted drums, and available with heaters. The best buy at this point seems to be the GE, although the Affinity is close in price/capacity/performance. What I don't like are the dumbed down limited cycle choices, I guess I've been spoiled by the Neptune 7500's LCD menu-driven interface.
But then, I'm not looking to replace the Neptune anyway. It's working just fine (knock on STPP).
