Steve, these 1947 or earlier GE round dishwashers we fascinating in a way. You loaded. Added the soap. Followed the suggested time from the manual. Let it fill. Flipped a lever and it washed. Paused the machine, flipped the lever to drain. I believe Mark told me the "cycle" could last 10 minutes. Now, mind you , with this manual control, you could have it do any operation for as long as you wanted.

...my machine takes over an hour!

Mine takes over an hour and I don't mind.

No matter how hot the water comes from the tap, my WP takes over an hour for a cycle on the normal wash with hi-temp boost.

The results are great though.
