You know how things go with you and those timers------I'm surprised you didn't already have a replacement ordered!

Yesterday, I was doing a load of laundry in the Norge Timeline.
It paused after the wash cycle. When it was starting to spin, smoke came from the timer and the machine stopped.
I put in a call to Dr. Manny today and await him to call me back. I never like to rush him and he currently has
Blackstone 250 and '51 Westinghouse at the shop. I have a feeling it will be a while before the Norge is up and running, but I am confident that Manny will take good care of it.

Another timer? I wonder if there is something up with the electricity in your house. Could the voltage be a little abnormally high?

Hi Robert. I will mention it to Manny but I have a feeling that a 51 year old timer may have some parts that are worn out.
Also, Nate noticed that the fill flume, which is right next to the timer is splashy. Will wait for Dr. Manny to return my call.

OOH now that is a great idea for something to have checked.

I know Long Island has voltage on the higher side. The contacts on the surface-element heat switches of my electric cooker keep burning out and arcing.

In my old house the AC voltage averaged around 123 volts, in the new house is averages around 116-117. I seem to have less timer issues in the new house.

Voltages higher than 125 or lower than 115 I suspect would cause havoic with older timers with worn or dirty contacts.

Hi Robert. Just spoke to the contractor who has done all the plumbing and electrical for the laundry area. He says he will check the voltage but he expects that it should not be a problem as this place was built in 1987. I will keep you posted. In the meantime, we just got the tankless water heater up and running. The first one was defective so he took it back to the plumbing supply house and got another one. So far, it works like a charm.

Dr. Manny just called. He is coming next Tuesday to take the Norge to the shop. I asked that he work on the Norge before the other machines. I figured that he would decide to bring the Norge to the shop.

Ross, sorry to hear about the Norge. Hopefully Manny will have it up and running soon, along with the Blackstone and Laundromat.

Reading Steve and Robert's posts, I have to wonder about the voltage being higher than normal myself and possibly having an effect on the timers. Considering that the newer machines (with sturdier timers, such as the 1-18, Maytag A806, and Hotpoint) and the machines with rebuilt timers (such as the '59 and bolt-down Kenmores) have been operating normally with no problems, it does make sense that the older, more delicate components of an original timer would be more susceptible to this.

Bigger question - how do we clone Dr. Manny for regional assistance? Literally there is not a service person in my area who doesn't offer blank stares or shrugs of disinterest if I mention old Frigidaire, if they even know what it is...

I am amazed that in the middle of New England that the trash and replace mentality has really taken hold.

You are incredibly lucky to have someone who cares about those things as much as he does.
