Reading Steve and Robert's posts, I have to wonder about the voltage being higher than normal myself and possibly having an effect on the timers. Considering that the newer machines (with sturdier timers, such as the 1-18, Maytag A806, and Hotpoint) and the machines with rebuilt timers (such as the '59 and bolt-down Kenmores) have been operating normally with no problems, it does make sense that the older, more delicate components of an original timer would be more susceptible to this.
