Norge dryer?

From here, all I can say is...that's a nice looking panel.
I'd say it's a Norge.

what is the black rectangular panel under the main panel
but just above the top surface? I see writing but can't read it...is that just a decorative strip with writing to identify the model/features or are there controls on that strip as well?

It's a decorative strip as you describe. Norge wouldn't offer anything that intricate as late as this dryer is --mid-to-late 70s or early 1980s.

Were they like the Nash or Falcon of the washer/dryer products? (i.e., they were an inexpensive alternative to the other names? ) I don't hear much about Norge other than grumblings about quality - but not sure when they may have entered the doors of demise.

That's a Norge. Possibly a Fedders Norge. Strong, big, manly,powerful dryers. One gripe, the painted drums frequently peeled and rendered themselves yukky. At least you could attach the optional Hair Dryer attachment and freshen up yer "Do".
I've wanted somebody, anybody on this site to tell me whether one can repaint the drum of a painted-drum dryer.

This looks like the match to the TOL 1970 Norge washer - the brochure is in the ephemera library:
Ken, I have painted WP drums where the paint was worn away. I used two part epoxy paint and it lasts for several years.
