I forget who asked, but I just posted a couple of pics of the inside of the '74 Norge by Fedders that I acquired a couple months ago. Photo #'s 35,36, and 37. This machine surprised me at how vigorously it moved the clothes around as well as turned them over. I hope to video record the action in a couple months when I buy a DVD video recorder.

Looking at this Norge brought back fond memories. I had forgotten how large the tubs were in those machines.Same design
as our Fedders Norge.Good washers,though very LOUD.

Matching Dryer
We used to have the matching dryer to this washer. What a wind tunnel the Norge dryer was. Most dryers suck the air through the drum. The Norge had a huge turbine behind the drum blowing air into it. Not long before its demise, the door handle broke off and we used a grip from an old pair of jumper cables to keep the door closed.

Hi! I have some friends with a lake house who have a "Crosley" of about this vintage---looks exactly like it. It still works great and I love to hear it in action, Ka-Choo Ka-Choo! Thanks for the pix. -Steve

I once heard an early 1980's model Admiral washer washing, and it was made identical to that Norge by Fedders washer you were talking about and you were right about it being loud. That Admiral made so much noise agitating, and the tub brake had a very loud clank at the end of the spin cycle.But they say the tub stopped very quickly at the end of Spin on those machines.I thought Magic Chef made that design of washer.

I have an old 14 lb Magic Chef washer that is built like the Norge's. It has the same agitator as the Norge. It runs very quiet when agitating, but, when it goes into spin, there is such a loud clunk coming from the brake release solenoid, you can hear it outside the house. Also when you lift the lid and the brake engages, you get the loud clunk again, and the tub stops almost instantaneously. I have never seen a washer that stops the tub from full speed within a second of raising the lid. You almost need to wear earplugs when doing laundry in this machine. HA! HA!

Western Auto's Catalina brand had that same agitator and burp-up filter, at least for a while. Two sets of neighbors had them (one mid-line, one TOL with pushbuttons and lighted console). I enjoyed 'peeping' whenever I had the luck to catch them running.
Ah. This is true. White's Home and Auto is what was in my home town. One of my father's aunts had a brother who worked for Western Auto in another city, and she always had a Wizard.

Norge agitators
Those agitators seemed huge. I don't remember great turnover though with large loads.The base fins seem relatively shallow given how big the tubs were. but our Norge always got the clothes clean and at the end of the day that is what really matters.

My '56 Norge doesn't really have much turnover, but it was rated #1 in 1954 for cleaning ability, so I guess turnover is not always and good indicator of cleaning ability. The agitator is so big compared to the tub that everything gets washed where it is.

The Jenn Air washer agitator does has an powerful turn-over since Maytag redesigned the fins going up the agitator. Extra large loads circulate without a problem......

Someone made mention on another thread about the Fisher and Paykel handling a king size comforter. The only top loading machine that I ever thought could handle my comforter was a Magic Chef(Norge). That tub was HUGE. Of course, regular wash speed would have ripped it to shreds. Thanks to MC/N for the Gentle/Fast setting. I used it for Comforters/Blankets/Throw Rugs. It was great. And loud enough that you knew when it was finished when you could hear the tv again.
