Norge, What year did they stop throwing the water

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

It was about 1964 when they went to the large perforated tub, but they continued to make the solid tub machine concurrently with the big one for a while, or at least selling off inventory of the small tubs so it's not so much the year as it is the introduction the large perforated tub. This was when Norge introduced their "Extract" portion of the cycle with the long spray rinse that was not so much of a spray as a waterfall.

The first washer is a solid-tub, so it would have no way to do a neutral drain, it has to spin the water over the top. When Norge/Wards introduced their 18lb perforated tub washer the early ones did a full neutral drain. Later on they started to spin after draining the tub 3/4 of the way.

NORGE WASHERS

The extra large perforated washers were introduced as Tom stated about 1964 as 15 pound cap machines. Like GE the capacity claims keep going up even though the tub didn't get any bigger on norge and the wards models they claimed 15 , 16, 18, and 20 pound capacities at various times. For the 20 pound claim they did had to put a 3/4 HP motor in as the 1/2HP motor would not pass the UL test with out tripping the motor overload protector. In actual use all the 3/4 HP motors were good for was burning up timer contacts and wasting electricity it really didn't allow you to wash more clothes as the tub was the same size unless you were willing to stuff the tub so full as to destroy your clothes. As Tom said earlier Norge continued to make the solid tub washers through about 1968 as a less expensive lower end machine.

Norge!

I never realized Norge made the solid tub until 1968!
I have one Aunt that had a 1963 solid tub. I wanted her to use it when we went for a visit but she refused! :(

My early 1990's Magic Chef had a full spin drain. Combo52's post re: timer contacts is on the spot, it was the cost of a timer that sent the M chef to the curb. It was a powerful washer, I was indecisive about getting rid of it. I still wish i would of bought the timer. We bought the Raytheon Amana to replace it, the absolute hands down, most awful machine we ever owned. alr2903
