It's been reported that aluminum attachments may contain lead. KA hasn't denied it at this point.  Stainless is available but at a high cost.

Appliance manufacturer KitchenAid has found itself under fire over whether attachments for the company's popular stand mixers contain lead, and the company isn't expressly denying the claim.

Several concerned viewers emailed NewsCenter 5 after reading claims online that the aluminum mixing attachments, which come standard with KitchenAid mixers, may contain some level of lead.

Whirlpool, KitchenAid's parent company, did not respond to specific questions about the issue, and would only issue a broad statement in response to an inquiry.

The company's statement says, "All KitchenAid stand mixer accessories are safe to use," but it also acknowledges "that aluminum alloys can contain trace levels of impurities."

It adds that "there is no recall of these accessories for that reason."

I think the only aluminum part I'm aware of the the coated beater that my tilt head Ka uses.  Often wish it was stainless. I believe the drop bowl uses an aluminum beater that is not coated.

I picked up a K45 model at a thrift store about ten years ago.  It had the non-coated flat beater and dough hook.  I had my mom's old K45SS in the basement, which had seen better days, and switched out the coated beater and hook from her machine because those can go through the dishwasher.

I don't know why KA provides coated on their less expensive models and non-coated on larger/"professional" bowl lift models.  I've never had any issues with the coating peeling off or anything like that.
