To put this in perspective of how pathetic these people are who complained about those harmless ads, how many of us as kids remember this posted on a lighted sign on a building in downtown Miami?

It is sort of funny though that a clothing store uses so many partially dressed models when they could be using those bare torsos to show some shirts, sweaters or blouses. I guess these models are not so much about showing off clothing as they are about creating a special aura that ordinary kids believe they can join by buying the expensive clothes and then dream of walking half-clothed through life. Better the lean teenagers should walk around with flesh on display than those who are older with more of a lower quality commodity.

We had the animated version of that Coppertone billboard with dog tugging on the shorts along one of the major freeways here for decades. It got older and more faded and finally was removed at some point. And gee whiz, back in those days where every town was "Pleasantville" there were never any pickets or obscenity monitors complaining about that signage. How much do you want to bet the A&F complainers are misguided bible thumpers from the religious right? It's their response to images such as those A&F ones that is obscene.

George Carlin once asked in one of his routines

What would you rather your kid see at the movies or on TV? A passionate couple making love, or some people violently killing each other?

I know which one I'm more likely to experience (I hope),
Dave

Beach plans to drop charges against Abercrombie store

VIRGINIA BEACH

City officials said Monday that they plan to drop obscenity charges filed against an Abercrombie & Fitch store manager at Lynnhaven Mall, where police confiscated two large posters of partially dressed models over the weekend.

The Abercrombie & Fitch promotional photographs appear in the fashion retailer’s stores throughout the country, including at MacArthur Center in Norfolk. One photo depicts the backs of three shirtless men, including one holding jeans that hover well below his waistline and reveal the top of his buttocks. The other, as described by a Virginia Beach police spokesman, shows a topless woman with her hand covering a portion of her breast...

I think a lot of good points are being brought up in this thread.
In Europe I have seen a lot of magazines that have ads similar to the Yves St. Laurent ad depicted earlier in this thread. In fact in Germany they have a teen magazine which shows the current teen idols in total frontal nudity! I can't think of the name of it, (Pantera, Help!) but when my German friends came over for a visit with their 16 year old daughter, she had a copy of it. Customs confisticted it as "obscene material" due to the fact that the people whose photos appeared in the magazine were obviously under 18.
I have a friend in Canada who usually refers to the United States as "The Excited States" because of stuff like this. Aren't we supposed to have separation between church and state?

This is a big joke, right? I mean, come one.....those images are obscene??? And the Coppertone suntan advert was okay back in the early 70's? I think some people need to have their heads closely examined.

Allen, the religious right is working feverishly to create siamese twins out of church & state. All one needs to do is look to Iran to see how democratic such a system would be. We should see some relief starting about a year from now unless there is some sort of major implosion on the democratic side of the presidential race.

Re: MacArthur Center, why aren't these same righteous (in all contexts) nut cases calling for the town of Norfolk to change its name? Those of us who don't live in that area refer to it as "Nor-folk" but when I hear locals mention it, it sounds a lot more like "Nor-f*ck" to me. I would be having a field day with that pronunciation if I lived in that area, yet the thumpers don't give it a second thought.

I actually think they wanted this to happen for free publicity. I didn't see the girl in the store on Sunday when I went, but now I want to go to see it. I think it's a different pic posted than the one above.

I'm pretty sure Europe is less censored than North America. The first time I stepped into an A&F store was in March 2007, and their picture out in the front was the picture on the left. However, March was also the month when they opened their flagship store on Saville Row, London, and to promote their opening, they put the original picture (on the right) on buses everywhere. They photoshopped out the buttcrack for North America, but I don't think there were any complaints when they displayed the one with the buttcrack in London.

Yes, That is the A & F store policy.
I just happened on to this "event" this weekend.
In october of 2007 Improv Everywhere got about 200 men together and at 4:37 in the A & F in New york removed there shirts.
They were divided by birth years on each of four floors.
Funny story with managements reaction.
One guy in line to buy a $45 shirt was escorted out, he said he needed to buy a shirt - they answered him go put a shirt on and you can buy a shirt !
All participants were told if approached to answer they were there to get a shirt.
Too funny - for a store that markets the shirtless male.
Here is a link

When I worked at the Four Seasons, I had to be at work at 5:30am. There was an A&F store in the hotel, and the employee entrance was right next to one of their display windows. It was mighty nice to see some of their huge beefcakey photos on a cold dark morning, lol.

I agree that a handful of puritans in this country with weird sex hangups and body shame issues ruin all the fun for everyone else. I think that the kind of repression they preach leads to sad closet cases like Ted Haggard and increased instances of Teen pregnancy and STD's (because we don't talk to kids about sex).

Greetings all.

Tom. Is this the referenced pic in today's NY Times?

I'm sorry, but I fail to see why this would be considered risque, sexy, attractive or anything along those lines.
What is all the fuss about? If anything parents should be outraged that a 'tween or teenager that appears to be so young should have tattoos.
Perhaps a better question is, why is it that when female sexuality/sensuality/appeal is smeared everyhwere that is ok, yet treating males the same way is not.

Well nudity is all well and fine but for a lot of us its damn cold right now! If we all went naked all the time we would use our washing machines a lot less. Now that wouldn't be fun. We as a country are very stuck up about ourselves in many facits, not a good thing. What is nature is basic, enjoy it.

What happened ---

MY subject line did not post above
it was: No Shirt, No Service.
toggs - What i was talking about happened in October of 2007 - Unless you were talking to a different Tom. The pic the post is about is inserted up a little in Gansky's post.
tom

Woof-------

How 'bout the Armani underwear ad in the Feb. Vanity Fair starring David Beckham!
'Chile please! Bring me a hand-fan!

I can understand why the chick in Gansky's photo#1 is standing there so calmly, but those boys in photo # 2 are sure on the run---- with Greg in hot pursuit, no doubt. How did you ever hold on to the camera dear?

Oh and don't be too surprised about moral police here in Virginia. Remember, Falwell's Liberty Urineversity and Thomas Road Baptist Programming Church are just right up the road from me in Lynchburg. Its big-time evangelical country around here. Our local programming has the Pat Robertson Propaganda Hour on NBC right after the Today show every weekday morning. Guaranteed to fire up the spirit and go after those demon homos.

IMO this is 'gonna be big-time Huckabee country here. You know, the evangelical "wolf in sheeps' clothing". Seperation of church and state---indeed!

And I don't care what anybody thinks----if I had young children, especially young teens, in todays world I most certainly would try to overprotect them and try to make sure they did not end up a statistic on the evening news----- if I could. They would just have to think I am a "meany".And I have way too much mileage for them to try to pull anything over on me.

'Sistah doesn't fall off of that turnip truck too easily anymore.

Here's an ad from one of Abercrombie's other concepts, RUEHL. Keep in mind RUEHL's target is aged 22-35, and there are only around 20 stores in the whole US.

the local perspective...

Hampton isn't far from VA Beach, I can be there in less than a half an hour if the traffic is good. Everyone I've talked to about this thought it was nuts. It's amazing how some people can be.
