After a rough week at work, a weekend of puttering around with the machines in Ogden was just what I needed...

First project: The bleach and fabric softener dispenser from the 65 Lady K washer. I feared the worst - that the seals on the plungers for each of the chambers meant for bleach and fabric softener would not seal firmly. Turned out they were fine! The problem with this unit was that the water barely trickled out of the chambers... The lower chamber and outlet were seriously clogged - it seems that some furry little fiends got into the washer at some point and stored their supply of snacks in the dispenser. It took about 20 flushings, but I got it cleaned out. It's ready for re-installation!!

Oh, and a question - I have never owned a washer with automatic bleach and fabric softener dispensers before - I am guessing that you should dilute these products with water. Is that correct??

Project 2: The 56 GE dishwasher.

Last weekend, I had noticed a pool of water at the base of the machine after washing a Bob-Load of pots and pans. I noticed immediately that I had dislodged the tub gasket. Fortunately, I had found an original GE replacement gasket some time ago, so I figured it was time to get that into place. So I did - however when I ran a test wash, there was still a drip... It was coming from the drain pump chamber (yep, the same one that gave me such grief when I was first installing this machine). At least I know I can fix this - it'll take a couple of coats of high-temperature epoxy. That will have to wait until next week, though!

Project 3: Ongoing improvements to the Ogden Laundry

Hubby had been keen to put in a new ceiling in the basement - there's a couple of panels left to install, but it's looking good! Of course when the dishwasher leak was spotted last week, someone was really quick to remind me that I had better not let ANYTHING ruin the new ceiling...

Project 4: Get the Lady K into the house

After the rebuild, I had water-tested the Lady Kenmore washer. It's getting late into October, so I knew I had to do something fast. So, the Lady K got moved into the basement for the last de-bugging work. The bleach and fabric softener dispenser just has to be re-installed but I do still need to find and fix the leaks from the water inlet valves. That should not be a big problem, so I am hopeful that the Lady will be washing soon. But where will this one live?? Ah, stay tuned....

Lady Kenmore Single Shot Dispensers

My 1971 LKM has these dispensers and I have used them successfully for many years. I would put the FS in full strength and immediately add a cup of very hot water, for the bleach side I would again poor it in full strength and add maybe a 1/2 cup of water [ should not be hot ]. Almost every time I use this washer I poor hot water in both dispensers even when I am not using LCB or FS. These dispensers worked well but in the hands of the average user they usually clogged in no time.

 

People just didn't have enough common sense to use these any longer which is why KM shifted to the triple Dispenser in the early 1980s and the WP models just went back to non electric dispensers that users had a harder time destroying. Problem with the triple dispensers is that many users had no idea of how to do laundry and many of these were destroyed by people using too little detergent in the washer and the resulting mineral deposits rendered the dispensers clogged and non functional.

 

After this WP engineers became the first to introduce fresh water flushed triple dispensers on KM and later KA TL washers on their DD machines. Now many TL washers have fresh water flushing dispensers like all FL washers have had for years.

When dollying that machine you want to make sure to dolly it from the right front otherwise you run the risk of snapping the sidecheck valve off the side of the outer tub.Saw this happen many times back in the day.

Thanks, John! I would put myself in that category of people who have no idea about how to use 'em properly... LOL

I never would have thought about putting plain water into them when they were not being used - thank you for the tip! 

 

Now, let's see how I do with that leaky water valve....

yep and I remember the the FS dispenser clogged up with Downy no less as it was as thick as maple syrup

I'd go downstairs and the dispense would be full of water because the siphon between the chambers was full of goop

Pipecleaners and blowing air froma rubber tube cleared them somewhat but they never really did clear all of the way out
