Well I went to my favorite goodwill today. Out of the dozen or so vacuums, I picked this up! Its an Oreck XL model 9100. Dont know how old it is.

They had 2 hoover convertibles, a dial a matic with all tools, singer twin fan in burgundy, hoover elites, 3 old eureka uprights, one 70s Wards with cordwinder and VGI too.

And this....

Well It was only $10, and my grandma has been wanting one I know. Ran well. Looked good. Why not!

After cleaning it up, and with a packed full bag, I have to say, its actually a nice little vacuum. A tad flimsy. The handle pole rotates and wants to pull apart it seems. Perhaps a broken latch. But I can tell it was built with quality in mind.

The vacuum grooms exceptionally well, and is pretty quiet at 4 amps. I really like the handle. Kind of an offset triangle shape, Very ergonomic I think.

All in all, a good low pile carpet for those who need a light vacuum.

I give it a 7.5 out of 10.

Here is the handle. This and the dyson, I find to be the best handle designs for a vacuum.

Sure is different from the wooden stick handle of my 1919 hoover 102. :P

I'm an Oreck house

Yes I have the Oreck 8 pounder, the Orbiter and an Oreck commercial wet-dry vac. All were purchased new.
I have a Douglas vac which is actually the Ironman without the Oreck label.
Anyway. I love all of them.
What is so great about the 8-pound Oreck is the ability to grab it by the neck and run to another area of the house to clean. It is so easy to grab-and-go especially when your house has multiple levels.
It's an absolute winner. It goes underneath furniture and is low enough to clean under the toe recesses under cabinets. The informercials are absolutely correct.
... and I do not work for Oreck.

Good overview! I agree.

I do like the long cord too.

Im going to try and do some trading with a friend of mine for a new style oreck. We picked up about 40 vacuums from the Filter queen dealer, who sold all the trade ins for $100. Some kirbys, rainbow, tristars, older hoovers, sanitaire (where I got my 2009 S677D TOL) and a few orecks.

One of those orecks was the newish all white model, with gold trim and lettering on the bag. It was a good looking machine.

I would have never said this in the past, but I wouldn't mind an oreck of my own! For a quick cleaning before guests, Its a great machine!

Here is one like it. I think. Its been quite a while since I last saw it. I could have sworn the bag was white, not grey.

check the handle screws on the backside of the handle where the upper and lower sections join-make sure these are there and tight.then your handle will be much better.Usually two philips screws as I remember on Orecks.

Orbiter

I have my eye on the orbiter for tile cleaning and polishing.  Think it is gonna be my next investment.

Dont know on bags! It came with a caked full one! You can see it in the first picture background.

As for the handle. I found the problem. Its where the 2 sections of the tubing meet. in the middle. There should be a little spring loaded button but its missing so the handle swivels around there. The cord wont allow it to separate though.

Orbiter is a Godsend

I bought the Orbiter some ten years ago at the old house.
To scrub the basement floor took hours with a Hoover two-brusher Slurp-0-Matic.
I became frustrated with the whole thing and bought the Orbiter.
WOO-HOO. Done in a half-hour.
I've scrubbed floors in the old and new house. Polished the wood floors. I used the dry carpet cleaner and it worked well.
I scrub the garage floor every season. When pidgeons took roost at the condo's balcony, I bought the wire brush attachment and scrubbed concrete!
Sorry to gush, but if it broke tomorrow I wouldn't fix it... I would just buy a new one. It has saved me so much time over the years I truly cannot be without it! This is especially true for those who have basements!

Malcolm........

before the Oreck store I was working in went out of business, I bought a used Orbiter, and I love it for "Bonnet Cleaning" my carpet, I used to give demos on it, for hardwood and tile. It is a very versatile machine, and worth the money, it does a terrific job on all floor surfaces.
Brandon, Oreck vacuums are very easy to service which is why they last so long. I wouldn't throw out an Oreck because you can rebuild yours for less than the cost of a brand new one. They are very good vacuums. A pack of Hypo-Allergenic Bags is about 8 bags for $29.99 Oreck recommneds changing bags every three months or until the bag reaches the fill line.

I've never vacuum'd with their uprights, but do have a couple of their "Super B's."

In fact, I was at yard sale a couple weeks ago and found one brand new in it's box, with original sales/ordering forms........for $5. Yeah, it came home with me.

I guess mine doesn't get much "hard" use. The bag never fills up...as a matter of fact, I get a free tune up every year and they change the bag then (which is usually 1/4 full) - I haven't even opened the pack of bags I bought!

Hey all.

The orbiter is a real classic design for a polisher. That style goes back to the 30s or so. A design, like the hoover convertible, that has proven to be an excellent basic design.

These orecks are indeed very easy to service. i striped down the XL in about 15 minutes. Washing all parts now.

Dont need to buy any parts. This machine has everything in top notch condition. Just needs a new paper bag!

The handle has a service sticker from 2001 so I know its older than that.

It's true.....................................

David Oreck did work for Whirlpool before he started his own company.

Malcom, I just came home with an Orbiter...the black one.  They are on sale at the Oreck store for $100 off both models.  I took the plunge.   10 year warranty + 1/2 HP for the black model.
