A Match Made in Heaven

Washendry:

I think that this would be the perfect mate to your new Bendix (do I hear wedding bells?).

Wow, what a find, This was my Mom's dryer up to 71. Still have the Maytag wringer she used, hmmmmmm, this one is tempting! Never thought I would ever be able to pair those up again!

Any Hamilton Historians?

I grew up with a Hamilton Dryer. It had the "sun-e-day" lamp and the basement glowed violet when it was on. Does anyone know if Hamilton was popular outside the midwest. Seems every other basement in Detroit Area had a Hamilton Dryer. Quiet and dependable. Any Hamilton historians among the club members? I would love to know more about why they had great dryers but I have rarely seen their washers. Neal

I can recall quite a few households that had a Hamilton dryer in the 50s...only one that had a matching Hamilton washer. Many women seemed to pair their Kenmore, Frigidaire, or Westinghouse washer with a Hamilton dryer...guess they had a good reputation. I believe they produced the first clothes dryer.

My dad brought home a Hamilton just like this in 1958. I believe that it was maybe 8 to 10 years old at the time. He had done some re-modeling work for an apartment house complex in West LA and 6 of these machines were being thrown away. They had been used in the laundry room and had been coin operated. It didn't have a lint trap so he installed it on our covered patio just outside of the laundry room door. It could dry a load of jeans in 30 minutes! It had a "modulating" burner and standing pilot. The bracket that held the temperature sensing device, in the drum, broke off and the sensor was damaged. This, then, caused the burner to operate at full blast. We discovered this when a load of dad's white T-shirts and socks came out scorched. The part was no longer available, so Dad just adjusted the gas supply valve so that the burner only fired up half way. It took longer to dry a load but it beat hanging up clothes on the line. It finally died for good in 1975 and went to the land fill.

I have seen quite a few Hamilton dryers at sales around here. There was one behind my Launderall dealer's with a chimney on the top of the dryer (looked similar to a water heater) that was very cool. Scott O. (scott55405) was with me, we didn't take the dryer but did snatch the top to a WP washer we swooned over...

Another Hamilton that sticks out in the appliance memory slush was similar to the ebay model. It had been mounted on a metal stand in a basement, the first pedestal?? They paired it with a Maytag A700 washer. I had the A700 Maytag washer and matching dryer in turquoise at the time so I snatched the instruction book from the sale. I still have the book. sigh...

Love Hearing Those Hamilton Stories

Thanks to all for you Hamilton Dryer stories. Yes, it seems there were many Hamilton Dryers paired with other brand washers. Lots of Kenmore/Hamilton marriages in Detroit area. My parents bought a "frog-eye" Kenmore in 1950 which I vaguely remember and loved (Teased because I watched more of that on a chair than the Soupy Sales Show. They bought their first Hamilton Dryer when I was born in 1956. Many folks had a washer.....then bought the dryer when they could afford it. This was usually a Hamilton for some very good reason I guess. That dryer lasted 28 years ....and probably could of kept going with a service. Hamilton Dryers were sold and serviced in this area mainly by the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company. They used to have a display dryer in the window of their Downtown Detroit headquarters. No washer, though!!!
