Oil Core Skillets...
Hello.
These are usually sold as " extra's " with high end cookware ( such as saladmaster ) sold at party's or occasionally available over the net. The regular stovetop cookware is quite good also, and I have enjoyed mine for over 30 years - it still looks like new despite many trips through the dishwasher. The Electric Skillets are usually sold as an " extra " and are rather expensive..... but then so are the other pieces if you buy them at a party etc...Shop around - they are available for MUCH less than the party plan price.
I have two of the electric pans - both bought at tag sales for almost nothing ( 2-3 dollars ) They work well, and maintain a nice even temperature. They work well for searing ( 400 degrees or so ) and for maintaining a nice slow simmer - almost like a slow cooker. They have the additional advantage of being able to be used with similar diameter pots used as steam domes allowing stacking of 2 or 3 additional pans on a rack and covering all with the Dutch Oven. There is rarely a sticking problem , and, with a little creative loading, they will fit into most dishwashers, and come out spotless.
On the downside - they are excessivly priced - WAY overpriced ! If you can find one at a yard sale, thrift shop or whatever - at a price you like - by all means buy it. A variety of temperature controlls will fit the pans, and work very well. There are a variety of inserts , racks, and other such also available - and patience will pay off if you have the time to browse the sales... A perusal of the web will bring up some of the multi-pieced sets and give you some idea of the possible combinations.
I can definitly reccomend these oil-interface pans - but NOT at the horribly inflated price that they are supposed to sell for. Be patient - and you'll find one at a decent price.
Final Remark: They make the BEST pineapple upside down cake I have ever had - and they never stick!
Happy Hunting.
