So as I plan on putting propper cabinets in my appartment, I have an idea of putting in a nice little 18" dishwasher and a hopefully matching trash compactor, on either side of the cabinet with the sink in it... Will I have any luck finding an 18" dishwasher from the 70s or 80s? Will a vintage dishwasher be a waste of my time from a usable-appliance point of view? They seem to be very short-lived things, well, at least compared to blessedly-simple refridgeration appliances and even-simpler ranges... (boil it down, pun intended, and a range is just some rheostats, thermostats, and Calrod in a box...)

My first was 18"

My first condo purchased in 1986, built in 1985 had an 18" Kenmore built by D and M. Actually it was a pretty good machine. Easy to load, held a respectable amount of dishes, reasonably quiet, and did an acceptable job for someone who does not rinse before loading and washes virtually everyting mechanically.

I never had a service call on the machine, but eventually the racks wore out and rusted. I also had some tub rust (porcelain). The condo was has been a college student rental since I left for CA in 1988.

I replaced the machine in 2002 with another 18" macine this time with the GE loge. Plastic tub, but everything else seems similar. I have never witnessed this machine operation.

I had an 18" (45cm) Kenmore badged D&M in '82. It was my first, too!
The lack of a mere 6 inches (15cm)really kills pot-washing ability to a great degree.
Some of these used a (realtively) huge full-sized cutlery basket in those days!
Good luck finding a porcelain model from that era. I'd be inerested to see it happen!

I have a Kenmore 18" portable dishwasher that I would love to get rid of. We bought it in 2004 and only used it until 06. It was in storage until last month when I used it for 3 weeks before I got the Kitchen Aid portable. When we had Corelle dishes it was fine, but with Fiestaware...forget it! I used to pre rinse with this dishwasher unless I was using Pots or Heavy cycle. I hate tower wash dishwashers!

GE

GE has a nice dual spray arm 18"dishwasher with a stainless steel tank. It's very basic as far as controls go but does a great job and is very quiet.I believe they retail for around $499

That GE is Haier in disguise and they wash well. Friends of ours have the portable Danby they got at Best Buy for 400 and it washes on par with dare I say my Miele. They are not quiet like a my Miele and they use very little water but they clean like you wouldnt believe. And one thing that it has is a water softener built in.

Miele makes an 18"

Miele has two 18" models. One is designed as a bar glaass washer with the tall glass insert included. It also (I beleive) the only model that has an exposed heating/dry element. Both models work well, but there is no discount for the lass of the six inches.

I'm in Billerica...

What color is the Kenmore... can you point me towards a stock photo or something? Lots of modern appliances are ugly towards me but I might take if off your hands if it's not ugly and not white...

Er, No Do Not Think ALL 18" Units Are Convertable

Have not read it in ages, but my 18" Kenmore (built by Frigidaire) portable says nothing in the owner's manual about being convertable, nor was it advertised nor sold as "portable/convertable", which IIRC convertable portables usually are.

Not saying the unit cannot be built in, for someone who knows how such things are quite easy.

The last place we lived (110 sq ft condo) had an 18" Whirlpool d/w... It was DU1800XT if i recall right... I never knew who made it but worked OK.. Not terribly great.. A year before we moved, it died and i redid the kitchen to hold a 24" and a trash compactor (this was a tiny kitchen)..That dishwasher (i learned to never skimp on the price of a dishwasher)a, uhmmm, Frigidaire, sucked even worse... But by that time we where wating on this place
