Old GE Range, what's it worth?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Nice-looking 1960 GE in Woodtone Brown.  Do all of the features (Sensi-Temp, both ovens, clock/timer, etc.) still work?  These are getting harder to find, but there are also probably fewer people looking for them as well.

If you like electric cooking,

KEEP it! You won't find anything made nowadays that is one tiny bit better than what you have.

I do not like electric cooktops one bit, but if the oven thermostats are close on, you will have excellent baking, roasting, and broiling.

The only substantial feature missing on this range is self cleaning oven, which at it's best, can be (according to others here, not me!) a mixed blessing.....I love my gas range with self cleaning oven. If one could marry an appliance, I would marry my range...

New is not always improved.

I sent the pictures to my mom...Shes in Laurens SC..... How much where you thking?

Oh would my momma be happy... Good ridince cheap a** BOL ge range that you have to turn on and off at the circuit breaker

I have been told from the previous home owner that everything on that range/oven still works. It also has what appears to be the original broiler pans etc. in the drawer. The hood hums but the fan doesn't turn. I figure a screwdriver, and a good cleaning and the hood would work too.

My wife wants to replace it, but it is a 40 inch, so we will have some difficulty doing so. We are planning on going with a dual fuel (might have to have one shipped here from overseas). I certainly won't be taking it to the dump though, because I know it has value...just not sure how much.

I figure y'all may know a fair asking price. Any guesses?

We've read about it here many times before

That is, wives insisting on new (let me guess -- stainless steel), flimsy, less capable, throw-away, toy appliances over the existing well-built, long-lasting real ones that would, by the way, make all of her friends jealous.

With very few exceptions, everyone involved has lived to regret it.

Actually, she/we don't want the industrial look of stainless. We want to switch out the range because we want a gas stove.

The brown color is a bit of an issue too because it wiil be difficult to find matching appliances. There is also the issue of finding a repairman to fix such an old unit if it were to develop an issue.

Does anyone know of a modern day 40-inch (39 3/8") dual fuel unit that is of decent quality? It seems they are sold in other countries...just not in the U.S.

I think 36" is the typically "large" size for ranges these days.  Anything larger would probably be semi-custom and significantly more expensive.

The "Woodtone Brown" color would indeed be tough to match, and I can relate to the desire for dual fuel.  I prefer gas for the cook top and electric for the oven and broiler.  However, if you were to keep the GE, I don't think basic parts would be difficult to find for it.

Our current home had a space for a 40" range.  We ended up putting a 30" model in, and found an 8" wide baker's-style 3-tiered rack on casters to slide into the gap.

It will cost $8000 or so, but there are a few.. None have any quality imho...
There all crap

Sears/Frigidaire just discontinued there 40" dual fuel ranges that where around $1200 or so

40" Dual Fuel Range -- Kenmore

Apparently they are out there for U.S. consumption, but good luck finding one in anything other than stainless.
