Wonder what is contained in that aluminium looking (like duct) coming from the ceiling to the top of the washer?
Or maybe it is the exhaust vent from the dryer in the background and just appears at first glance to be from the washer-------yeah---probably.
Three machines are there. The middle one is set back a little. That's where the stack is attached. It appears as if the stack is attached to what may be the detergent dispenser on the washer in front, but I don't think that's the case.

Maybe a hot water boiler in the middle?
According to the description of this bleak ante room to hell, there is a 50 lb. washer, an extractor, the tumble dryer and the ironer, so there are only two machines there in that corner. If you look closely, what looks like a big vent is a white painted water supply pipe and shadows of supporting bolts that extend down on either side of it. The flash threw the shadows on the brick wall. In fact, you can see the pattern of the bricks extending through the area of the "duct" or "vent."
