For all the things they might do wrong. . .

. . .GE still makes one helluva gas range. We bought the one that Consumer Reports rated a Best Buy and the second overall in the ratings (Hotpoint RGB745WEHWW, for those keeping score). In the Number One spot is another GE for nearly twice the price.

I LOVE the looks of the old vintage ranges, but there is something that new new electric ranges defintely have all over the older ones, and that's a clock that keeps time!!! I noticed your cool new hotpoint has a nice digital clock with thermostat in it.

I have NEVER seen a mechanical clock on an electric range that keeps time longer than a day or two. The new digital quartz clocks though seem to go for months without loosing their accuracy.

mechanical clock accuracy

The electric clock on my Wards gas range keeps perfect time, as well as any mechanical analog electric clock. Now, the problem is that they get gunked up over the years from all the gerase in the air but once you clean them, they run fine again.

Nice Stove Joe

It's a beauty and has features very similar to my GE slide-in. I know you will enjoy cooking on it. GE and Hotpoint make great stoves, and when they started offering gas models they didn't miss with them either!

Waring waffle machine

While looking at the pictures of both stoves-noticed on the counter a Waring flip type waffle machine-How well does it work? was considering one.I like BOTH ranges-both are very nice-is there somewhere where the old one could go?

Thanks, everyone. Oh, and tolivac. . .

. . .does THIS answer your question? :)

Yes, that's the old stove in the background. The iron was a very early Christmas present from Cathy. The top opens so high that I have to put a cutting board over a pair of burners and make waffles on top of the stove. And, yes, I DO separate the eggs and beat the whites in an unlined copper bowl with pure stainless steel beaters before folding them into the batter, and I let it rest 5 minutes before pouring the first waffle.

If this doesn't get someone out of bed, check for a pulse. :)

Joe, can this waffle iron be used with an electric stove?

Umm, Cathy definitely knew what she was doing when she got you that as an early christmas present. :-)

And you're awesome to make the batter totally correct.

appnut:

It's an electric waffle maker. The only place in the kitchen with enough overhead clearance to open the lid is between the cooktop and the range hood, and that's why I have to put it on a cutting board straddling a pair of burners. Provided you don't turn on the stove, it'll work on an electric stove, too. :)

Joe, nice to see your wit and humor here---I have enjoyed that said part of your personality all the time you've been on the THS Laundry & appliance forum.

Humor? What's that? :)

appnut:

I can't remember where I read it but the Appliance forum at THS was described as a bunch of cheerleaders for upscale brands who flame anyone considering buying anything made by GE, Maytag or Whirlpool.

The mood over here is a lot more open-minded. Heat is heat, metal is metal, and NO ONE can taste the difference between an egg fried in a Farberware skillet on a Hotpoint and one fried in Le Creuset on a Viking. :)

Au contraire.

My highly developed and sophisticated palate can tell the difference between baloney fried in Farberware and baloney fried in Revere. And oh, that Le Creuset! It gives the baloney a certain je ne sais quois, a mysterious flavor and heady aroma that make it a perfect foil for a bottle of vintage Thunderbird.
