Was there ever a time when this was where the lint filter waa?
Before HOH dryers, Maytag dryers had their lint screen behind the little door. Gas dryers of this time had the burner access door under a little door on the top and it was not for the pilot; those gas dryers had electric ignition.

The little door is as Tom said the lint filter this could be another water condensing dryer you can't tell from the picture.

Whatever it's (gas or water condensation), that dryer is TOL (chrome M A Y T A G strip gives that away) and was built before 1961 (older Maytag emblem on the front cover gives THAT one away). Of course, it has the lighted console that would be switched on and off through the use of two buttons.
My guess is that it's another water condensation dryer since it has the exact same small rectangular opening at the bottom right of the cabinet as the pink 640W dryer I posted earlier.
Either way, it's a rare TOL model and should be saved!!!!

We have the air flow and water dryers and they share the same lint screen and outer access plate. The plate with the opening for 4 fingers to grip is attached to the screen. The way that one is hanging at an angle makes me think that the frame for the screen is broken. These air flow dryers used a 3 inch vent, had approximately a 4400 watt heating element at about the 11 o'clock position, a perforated drum and the lint screen at the bottom, all signs of a dryer based on the Hamilton design. In 1957, the Maytag air flow model was color-check rated by Consumer Reports along with 5 other electric models, a judgement of high overall quality. The others were 2 GEs, 1DA-520P3W & 1DA-820P2W; Hamilton 385-E; Frigidaire DD-57; Norge D5.
