OLDER MAYTAG WASHER & DRYER

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

It is the Fabric-Matic - my aunt bought this washer to replace her TOL Speed Queen. I thought it was a beautiful washer and love the timed soak cycle. My aunt never really loved the machine and replaced it with the first Amana-branded (perf. tub SQ) in the early eighties.

is it an agitated soak? whats the proportion of agitate to still-soak? why didnt your aunt like it, Greg?

all front loaders should include a nice long tumble-soak option, imo.

If you include the serial number, we can decipher what year and month the washer was made.

My mom had the same identical set

My mother bought the A408 and matching auto-dry gas dryer in December 1976. She used them until year 2000. The tub in the washer had a lot of the porcelain worn off. The agitator would only make 1/2 turns during the wash just before she replaced it. The dryer just stopped heating. It was going to cost more money to fix it then she was willing to pay.

This washer and dryer washed clothes for a family of seven (mom and dad plus 5 kids). They only repairs the washer had the motor was replaced twice, drain hose replaced from the outer tub to the pump, and the water valves replaced.

She replaced it with one of the "POS Maytag Performa" washer and dryer. The washer performa was put out to pasture about 3 weeks ago. She replaced it with a Whirltag. The Performa sure didn't last 24 years like the A408 did.
