Haven't seen an original metal Slinky in years; I think they were introduced nationwide around 1957 or 1958, because I remember seeing the TV commercials when I was about five or six years old.
Don't know if electric shocks had anything to do with the switchover to plastic, but as we all know, stainless steel is more expensive to make than plastic...
and you can still get a Slinky snarled up in short order (I knew mine always did!)...
