I am going to try the Sears Ultra. I'm currently using Purex Mountain Breeze because I like how it smells and it's not too expensive.

I usually prefer liquid detergent - is the Sears Ultra liquid as good as the powder? I have a 4 year old top loading Kenmore Elite if that matters.

My detergent preferene seems to always be in flux, but.....

The one I always appreciate is Tide w/Bleach powder, original scent. I have never washed darks with it, but P&G sure wants you to think you can.

If I could indulge and have TWO detergents, it would be the above mentioned Tide and liguid Cheer for Darks. That is my favorite combination.

Thanks for all the responses! It wasn't an idle question - I am in the process of decluttering EVERYTHING in my house and i went to the cupboard under the sink to find some string and stood back and looked at the ridiculous array of chemicals and other garbage that I have accumulated. I am working through all the antibacterial kitchen sprays/Flash/Cillit Bang/Jif or Cif or whatever it is called this week, about 5 different chemicals for leather furniture, 7 laundry detergents (modest for many of you I know), 3 different dishwasher detergents and so on and so on. Utter madness. I recently used Persil non bio small and mighty and was really impressed with it. I always use an additive for really dirty whites so i guess it doesn't matter if the detergent is bio or not. I do favour powders over liquids and won't consider tablets, capsules or anything like that because my water is so soft the doses are too high. I am sick of the whole colour detergent racket and just want one for all jobs. Always been a loyal Ariel user but am open to any suggestions!

Nobody mentioned a supermarket brand (perhaps some of the US ones were but afraid I wouldn't know one way or the other). Does no one use or rate non branded detergents? I used to love Sainsburys Novon range but they changed it for the worse in my opinion and Waitrose Ultima powders were always good performers I found.

I would pick UK (Unilever) Persil Bio powder. And since you're in the UK, and don't have to pay the outrageous shipping prices!

If I had to choose an American detergent, it would be liquid Tide With Bleach Alternative HE.

I think that my choice would be moved only because of the scent, each producer here has at least one good performing detergent.

But because I like non scented or minimally scented products, I'd go for AVA powder by reckitt&benkiser.

Otherwise if I were in the UK I'd get Ariel excel gel but before the actilift formula

Mexican Ariel powder. I've already made the switch. I can get it in bulk for a decent price.

I've imported some European Ariel Bio powder and liked it too. But shipping cost is not practical. I usually get a box whenever I order color toilet tissue.

I used to use only All Small & Mighty w/Snuggle, but since it was discontinued, I only use Wisk Coldwater Power. Cleans well and removes most stains. And it's cheaper than Tide Coldwater.

For HE washers I use Tide Powder HE. For regular I like Tide with Bleach powder.

If I could step back in time, I would definitely use Instant Fels. Today, I use original scent Tide with Fels-Naptha bar soap.

Sears ultra plus orange box

No , the Liquid is not near as good! As the powder It gets out the nasties even in hospital work and helps me maintain a cost per lb far lower than the national avg.

I bought a big box of the powder, 200 washes I think, on sale for $12.99. I really hesitated though, because the instructions say to wait until the water fills and sprinkle it on top. Why do you have to do that?
I picture myself forgetting to go back downstairs once the water has filled...

Wisk

The old Wisk -- the murky violet colored stuff -- smell and all.

Rinso is apparently an off brand here in the U.S. these days. There are all types of Rinso products, including laundry detergent and fabric softener sheets, on the shelves of the 99 Cents Only Stores. A buck will buy you Rinso powder in a carton the size of a small-ish cereal box.

I don't wear many whites, and I have used this on whites and I haven't noticed a difference.

It has the old school Ariel Smell which I love!!!
