Ok guys, im not saying I WOULD buy a new range, butI want to know what you all think of a convection oven, I have never used one, Now, ,,,My Westinghouse is in the laundry right off the kitchen, its staying no matter what, but I now have propane in this house so I really want another gas stove...NO im not thinking about induction, wont even consider it, I really would rather have a vintage range but I cant find anything I like,if I do get a new range I want one with the big oval burner in the middle and it must be all gas, im one of the few who thinks gas bakes better, what do you guys think, the Frigidaire in the kitchen now is like new, but like every pull and clean oven I ever saw, it really doesent bake well at all, very uneven.if I find a vintage gas stove, I want a griddle, I miss that most of all, if vintage, I would prefer a Hardwick, Brown, Dixie , Roper, Universal,,etc...but really I want your opinions on new gas ranges..

I can say about the stove i have, bought a few months ago..

Kenmore Elite, all gas, full of bells and whistles, true convection, probe, real self cleaning, warming drawer.. it even has a slow cook program in the oven.

It may not last forever as a vintage stove, but it's not flimsy and the oven is simply the very best oved I've ever had in my life.

All I can say a million times is I love it!

My Frigidaire has the 5 burners on top but no convection fan in the oven.  If I had it to do over I'd get the one with the fan...not that mine does a bad job, in fact it does a fabulous job.  My mother got a Frigidaire one WITH the convection fan and the times I've used hers I've really liked it.  I'm with you, prefer baking with gas.

I almost cosider it

Blasphemy to even consider anything new, but the idea of that big center burner for a griddle and the idea of baking 3 or 4 cookie sheets full and have them all brown evenly is a selling point, but if a deal came up on a good old stove I would probably go with the old one, another question, are the sealed burners better???

how about...

a vintage Chambers with big center griddle? bulletproof build quality, smallish but super-efficient even-cooking oven, and the surface daisy burners can be upgraded with later style Plane of Flame burners for more output if needed for big canners and the like, but we never really needed to.

Honestly I still think '60s/70s vintage GE electric ranges bake as well as any gas range we've ever used, but of gas vintage Chambers and also Caloric (1960s) were pretty good... YMMV

i have never

had much luck with ge ovens, but the Westinghouse cant be beat, I had a great Hardwick butit was vomicado...lol it baked great too a Chambers would be very high on my list.

I'm not a serious baker ... the occasional frozen pizza, canned biscuits, cookies, brownies, cake mix (or a recipe), cheesecake, chicken breast.  I use convection mode on my (electric) GE Profile more often than not (but not for brownies or cheesecake).  I find it typically takes a smidgen more time vs. the claim for less time (at 25°F lower temp), or I set it for the actual called-for temp instead of reducing.  Good results across a sheet (or two) of cookies, nicely browned pizza (I like the cheese slightly crispy).  A (very simple) chicken breast recipe calls for a few mins of browning under broiler, which I find isn't necessary.  YMMV.

I've had a convection oven for a little over 20 years now.  I don't do a lot of baking, but when I do, it speed things up, especially if baking large batches of most anything.  Roasts and other meats come out great too and in less time.

Here's a long thread on the same subject from nearly 4 years ago.

I do a fair bit of baking.........

mostly cakes cookies, breads, casseroles, and roast beef and roast chicken.

I was very satisfied with my gas Whirlpool Accubake with high-heat self cleaning oven. VERY satisfied. Only baking failures were operator error.

I did not need or want a fifth burner, I rarely use more than three.

Deeply regret leaving it, and all my other major appliances behind, but I did need a wheelchair accessible bathroom. Only gas in this apartment is the Rheem furnace and tankless water heater, and no hookups for my Matyag Dependable Care team.

Go read the online ratings on Consumer reports.. if you don't subscribe it's free at nearly all library's.. There's big differences in the ratings by models, even within a brand,, some GE's do ok, others do terrible, same with WP etc.. It doesn't appear you can just go by the brand and expect each of their models to be similar, plus or minus a frill or two. Price doesn't seem to be a factor either with some inexpensive models doing really well and some expensive ones doing poorly.

Sometimes the features on newer appliances can be nice, but my hangup is I just don't care for how they look as compared to the vintage ones, Not sure this offers any real help here...
