i have that exact washer-mine had the exact same problem when i bought it,shorted
"wax motor".The control board also had a blown triac and burnt resistor-i replaced
those damaged parts on the control board and repaired/insulated the wax motor
(new parts could be bought too
The "wax motor" has a wax pellet in chamber with a
plunger,a disc-shaped electric heat pellet is clipped to the side to heat the wax
and extend the plunger-the heat pellet can "flash over"between the conductive
faces if it gets damp and cause the damage.When i tried my neptune when it had
the bad wax motor/damaged control board,washer would fill and tumble but would
not lock the door or spin.Since fixed,my neptune has been just awesome-my fave
daily driver.Cool sounds from the "switched reluctance"drive motor too!

We had that set
in a rental house we owned in VT, the tenants used the heck out of it with no problems, at least when we sold the place 2 years ago they were still going strong. I think it was one of the earliest "modern" front loaders?

the neptune was one of the first"new generation" U.S.front loads-it came out
around 1997,the "frigilux"type front loads came out around 1994-beating maytag by
a couple years.I think the neptune was one of the best maytag washers ever-just
too bad about the "wax motor" fiasco and a couple other minor glitches spoiled the
reputation...

well, at least up front you know, its a 3000 series, with the wax motor and control board issues, which the guy is honest about it, and thats a good thing, no suprises.......but all in all, get the washer fixed, and you have a realy nice set, no signs of major damage, matching.....and once fixed, will probly last you many years, and also still uses plenty of water for wash and rinse.....
I do love the motor ramp up sound of these 3000 series.....like a jet taking off!...
I wonder if that motor can be placed in the Electronic 5500 machines?.....

Wax Motor
Why not just employ a solenoid style lock? I hear of these motors failing a lot and sometimes taking the boards with them. Just curious, what was the reasoning behind using this and was there a revised fix for these?

I'm pretty sure when the wax motor thingy failed, it always took out the circuit board. Granted I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

-parts to repair the board in mine only cost a couple dollarsI think there are
repair kits on Ebay that include a new wax motor(updated,inproved version)and the
parts to repair the control board.

Ahhh....Neptune. The Washer That Killed Maytag.
I had the step-up (next-gen?) from this, with the itty bitty pushbutton controls...was *so* excited to get it when we moved into our new house. Loved the retro-future look, the high efficiency washing.
Then...had to have the boot replaced three times due to mold along with several other service calls (including wax motor, control board, etc.) Then it AND the matching dryer both completely die within hours of each other - on the very day we start potty training our oldest - the month after the extended warranty expired. So you can imagine how motivated I was to dispose of both machines and banish that entire brand from my house.
Oh, and I get bonus points because I found out about the lawsuit settlement for these various maladies after the closure period - they did not inform me in time in spite of having the appliance registered for warranty etc.
IIRC, it was shortly after this company-humiliating debacle that Whirlpool bought out the grand old brand, wasn't it?
Pity too - when it ~did~ work the Neptune cleaned really well, as far as I could see. The visual design was elegant and attractive. And the jet-engine whine was really something!

You know, I can't really understand a few things.. like...

I have always had a soft spot for Maytag Neptune Washers.
I see these as W/D sets all the time for sale on the Atlanta Craigslist. Majority of the time they look to be in very good shape. Usually they always have the description of the washer not spinning. Looks like an easy fix from what I have seen on internet videos.
Does anyone know if there were specific model numbers for the washers that had the pump spray from the sump? I was never clear what models had the "sump pump" and what models did not.
Also, were the electronic models better built than the first generation? There is one of the last electronic models they made not far from me at a too good to be true price.
