way before I was into washers or even into drycleaning. I was a typewriter collector. it started with watching the odd couple reruns in the 70s when I was a kid. I had my first underwood when I was 7. by the time I was 20 I had my parents attic full of them. I always thought that oscars machine was a remington standard or quite writer. they never showed the front of it only the back. but judging from the back and the color I believe it is a remington. any thoughts? thanks Bill

Hi Bill - I'm also a typewriter collector! I'm almost positive that Oscar had a Remington Super Riter in his apartment , judging from the return arm, color and profile. That was such a funny show!!

In the television show Oscar Madison Had A Few

Typewriters.

His desktop was a Remington early in the series, and think the portable was an Adler.

Later OM also had a red typewriter but not sure about make/model.

Have four typewriters and a huge box of Hermes spare parts.

Use the Hermes script typewriter when wanting something fancy such as invitations to my candlelight suppers. Being a manual typewriter cannot get used to using it for long periods. Was trained and mostly used electric thus cannot adjust to the "force" needed to hit keys when using a manual typewriter.

There were many typewriters, famous for what was written in (and left in) them, too...

There were two versions of the Olivetti girl ad above

The rarer hard to find one gives the brand as Olivetti Underwood, the transitory branding as Olivetti phased out the Underwood brand. Typewriters under both brands were made in Harrisburg, PA so Olivetti could call them "The American Dream Machines."

I really enjoyed all the great stuff you guys wrote about Oscars machines in the odd couple. In the 70s when I was a kid I used to mess up my room to emulate Oscars in the show. I personally like his Remington machine. what year is that model from? there were a few models in the 50s that looked similar. thanks Bill

oscar's typewriter

I have an old ad for a remington from 1955. It is the remington "noiseless"standard tyewriter. the return arm is a bit different than the one that oscar had. the end points up. on oms the return arm end points down and has a shoe horn look about it. I believe I had a remington like oscars. does anyone have a view of the keyboard? thanks Bill

can anyone show me a pic of the front of oscars machine?

I know I had a remington that was similar in shape however it wasnt a super writer. I was just looking at one on images and it is a light grey and says super writer on the front in raised letters. does anyone have a pic of what the front of oscars machine would have looked like? thanks Bill

When I was younger I had a small collection. I once found about 3 manual ones that someone was throwing out. I think some were Smith Corona, a Kmart version from the S.S. Krege era and an electric Smith Corona. I also recall as a kid happily typing away sentences of nonsense on my grandmother's manual typewriter that she let me take home. I forget what brand it was. In later years I had a couple of the electronic Smith Coronas with the daisy wheels.
