<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">I don't think I've ever seen a thread about our favorite recipes that we only make at certain times of the year (excluding Christmas of course). So with apples, squash, etc being "in season" now I thought I would start it off with an old family favorite.</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">This recipe comes from my great-aunts Helen & Alice. It's a fresh apple cake.</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">½ cup shortening</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">1 cup sugar</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">2 eggs</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">1 ½ cups sifted all-purpose flour</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">1 tsp. baking soda</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">¾ tsp. salt</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">¾ tsp. cloves</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">1 tsp. cinnamon</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">½ cup cold coffee</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">2 cups chopped apples</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">1 cup raisins</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">½ cup chopped nuts</span>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;">Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs, beat well. Add flour sifted together with all dry ingredients alternately with coffee, then stir in chopped apples, raisins, and nuts. Pour batter into either a well greased & floured tube pan or 9x13 loaf pan. Bake @ 350° for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.</span>
