Our washer died today! :(

Hello/hola everyone
well it happened today our washer died! we have or had a GE washer BOL/MOL model that we bought in 2002(plastic). Well when i first joined here i was searching for all of your help it used to make an ungodly screeching sound during spin. Then it would leak if you left laundry soaking in it. Then it had a brake problem when it would finish spinning it took the basket a while to stop turning around (sometimes). So today i washed one load of two pillows trust me it didn't overload it the pillows are so light weight and thin anyways, so yea did the first load fine then, when i was washing the comforter towards the very beginning of the rinse when it was suppose to go into the agitation it would struggle sort of like go and stop go and stop, i know it sounds like it was overloaded but it wasn't it handled much bigger loads trust me. I tried changing the cycle it was set to easy care its a setting where it does gentle wash and fast spin ideal for comforters perm press stuff like that as specified in the manual. when changed to the regular setting it worked but it was pumping the water out slowly! so i removed the comforter it was full of lint too, and then about 15 minutes later my father tried a small load it seemed to go fine until it started its nonsense again! so now we decided to get a new one well actually im buying it with my money i stepped up to it. what i dont get is ive done that comforter before and it isn't even thick, the water would always cover it and still today the washer failed! this would be the second repair if we repaired it but thats not gonna happen! another member here has the same model but im not sure if he would feel comfortable shouting him out. So yea were over it now but you can imagine the fustration...since im buying im opting for a whirlpool washer. what about the brands Inglis and Roper? I learned here there made by whirlpool...what we need is something economical (money wise im not rich LOL) and it MUST be super capacity plus! any model suggestions? I really appreciate your guys suggestions. i'll post a picture of the whore of a washer.

Hi Randy,

Whirlpool builds for many different "Brands" and you can often save hundreds of dollars for the same machine by simply buying a lesser known brand built by Whirlpool.
I have often heard that the quality varies between brands, don't believe a word of it. Why would Whirlpool go to the extra trouble to artificially lower their quality...it would cost more money to use the extra parts than to mass-produce in one level?!
Make your decision dependent upon the local service available for the brand you choose. If Sears is the only option, than I strongly urge you to forget Whirlpool and go with somebody else.
Even another GE would be better than Sears service.

Sorry about your washer.

You should stick with Whirlpool if possible.

I don't know who has Inglis now....Best Buy doesn't have them anymore.

I'd recommend a Kenmore next, but it is true, Sears service is not what it used to be.

The new Maytag center-dial at Home Depot...looks great but it has edges that could damage fabrics....they also have a well-priced new Admiral for two hundred less that looks like a good buy to me.

I like the GE toploader that has a stainless-steel basket that has (for lack of a better word) pleated sides to it and is the one GE T/L model that I haven't heard beef about, but it is the most expensive GE that Home Depot carries. Like the Maytag center-dial, it goes for five hundred bucks.

Personally, I'd go for a plainer, less expensive Kenmore with a porcelain tub for less and run the risk of any service issues.
Most of the service techs in this region are not up to par in this region anyway, regardless of brand. If you can get a good deal on a Whirlpool-built dealer at a small, private establishment, maybe that would be better for you in your situation....but the machines are similar, so why bother?

To hell with Maytags, If you want a dependable washer at a good price go with a Roper as you mention above. But myself? I would go with an old used Kenmore Direct Drive that is easy to work on even to a novice. You can wash for the next 5 years for maybe 40.00 investment if you look around for one of these at yard sales. This is only my opinion. haha.But a proven opinion around my house.

Thread# 11912 Whirlpool DDs

Look at this thread, it has much useful information. I think a used Maytag Dependable Care is the best thing money can buy for regular use of any vintage. With the Whirlpool DDs, buy new or used, it's mostly the same beneath the cabinet. New is new, but used is a great value and if repairs are needed, they are really very easy to work on, and seldom need it.

Ya, the old Maytags are cool machines until the brake package needs replacing. Sorry, but I never have cared anything about any Maytag.

Hi Randy. Sorry to about your GE. I suggest a direct drive,
top loading Whirlpool/Kenmore/Inglis/Roper. They are all the same but Inglis and Roper are bottom of the line
Whirlpools. Please keep us posted.

Hi Randy. Machine on Craig's list is a direct drive Kenmore.
Looks good to me but please check machine out as it is a used machine. Wonder why the people are selling it.

I'd jump all over that Kenmore for that price. Pretty much all the stuff mentioned in this thread (except for the GE products) is actually a Direct-Drive washer built by Whirlpool in Clyde, OH. If the Serial number starts with "C" that is your clue.

When WP bought Maytag they closed down all the crap-mills (Searcy, AK, Herrin, IL and Newton, IA) and put the designers to work slapping new labels on the best t/l washer to ever go platinum. The GE with the stainless tub (Harmony) is actually made by LG.

Randy, that cl posting looks good...as long as you check it out, how can you go wrong?

That's a perfect example of what I was thinking for you. I would buy that model myself.

Accapp, the GE at Home Depot that I saw was a whole different model I hadn't saw before, not the Harmony! It costs $500, and I remember thinking it looked and felt of somewhat better quality than their less expensive offerings.

The only quibble I had with it was that I like a mechanical (or at least mechanized) timer, and this one has an electronic dial that rotates freely without the "click-click" sound, and a "start" button next to it!

I loved the actual appearance of the Maytag center-dial, but the tub and fittings are truthfully much more refined on the GE then the Maytag, so I think that, for the same money, I'd buy the GE, or, if I had the time, wait for Whirlpool to get the Maytag's act together tub-wise.

I confess that I would like to get a look at the innards of the GE, just to get a sense of if this more expensive model could be any competition to the Whirlpools, quality-wise, and if they are better than the GE designs of a few years ago. Randy's negative experience with his plastic GE is not unique, and I always saw those machines as being sort of a low point for GE laundry. These breakdowns gave GE sort of a bad name and I'd love to see them pull it all together and give Whirlpool a run for their money, even though they could never prevail

sorry everyone why i tokk so looooooooong to respond busy workin' I bought the kenmore!!!! the reason the aldy was selling it was because she moved to a new home that had a washer and dryer when me and my mother wnet to check it out it was spotless the picture does no justice in showing that! she never even gave it hard use she gave me the books and everything intact she really maintained it below (if i did it right) are some pics at its new home! LOL ive called her "kendra" the knemore!
