I went down to Kill Devil Hills this past week and stayed in a beachfront cottage for vacation. The cottage was an older one built with cedar siding exterior. It was renovated and modernized recently with new appliances.
I spent most of the time enjoying one of my favorite activities...surfing! Of course, spending time in the water yielded lots of sandy, salty towels and trunks. I typically wear nylon "rash guard" shirts that keep my chest from getting torn up by the surface of the surfboard while paddling out, and the standard fare board shorts. You wear these shorts without any underclothing, as not to trap sand between clothing & your skin...likewise these clothes needed frequent washing, and the house provided a rather new GE washer for the job, and a Kenmore dryer. I chose to dry my clothes in the sea breeze using the clothesline under the house instead of the dryer. The washer has an interesting electronic timer dial that resembles the classic mechanical timer dial, only it does not advance. LED lights above the dial indicate what part of the cycle it's in. The washer has a dual-action agitator and a "waterfall" in the back...totally different than the old filter-flo GE my mom has. This washer seems to be a knockoff of design elements borrowed from Maytag & Whirlpool. Using Arm & Hammer perfume & dye free detergent, it was able to do a great job on restoring my surf clothing back to good conditions. the washer however did feel rather "toylike" but was remarkably quiet while running. The spin cycle was able to wring so much water out of my surf clothes, they were practicaly dry!
We also had a nice Hotpoint dishwasher in the house too that did a great job. With 9 people in the house, we dirtied up a lot of dishes, especially as we tried to out-do each other with how fancy of a meal we could prepare. We ended up running the dishwasher sometimes even twice a day. The nice thing about the dishwasher was that it really cleaned the dishes well....even the dirtiest stuff came out spotless, like a frying pan with burnt-on egg and sausage scum! The dishwasher was also extremely quiet, and considering the house had a combined kitchen & living area, this was important. The bad thing was that this dishwasher took FOREVER to finish the wash cycle! I guess I'm too used to my Kitchen Aid KDS18, and it's 22 minute long cycle!
Likewise, having good appliances always makes a stay in a vacation home that much nicer. I've stayed in "newer" homes that were beat all to heck, and the appliances were all abused and worn out. It was nice not having to worry about fighting cantankerous machines this time!
