On Episode 217 (1/27/1971) of The French Chef, La Julia trusses the dickens out a chicken and roasts it in an Open Hearth Rotisserie.

Then (at 23:45 in the YouTube video), she goes to the wall oven and pulls out an already-cooked chicken, which she has roasted on some sort of electric rotisserie apparatus. It looks like the contraption attaches somehow to the oven rack, and then the cord comes out of the oven into an outlet in the wall. I think this little rotisserie might be designed to work in any oven, which would be really handy. Then again, it might be something uniquely designed for this particular oven.

I have posted a screen shot below, but it’s a lot easier to see the whole thing in the video, which I have linked.

Has anyone ever seen one of these things? Is it for general use, or brand specific? I’ve been curious about this for years. If I could find something like this that would adapt to any oven, I’d buy it in a hearbeat.

I've seen something similar before

I have seen rotisseries like that that have electric elements in the bottom and are used on countertops before.

What's strange about this one is that the rotisserie motor goes in the oven too. Usually the motor has to stay out in cooler air. And lo and behold the one Julia is using doesn't have any electrical elements in the pan underneath. It just uses oven heat.

I imagine if you keep an eye open on Ebay for rotisseries you'll find one of these sooner or later.

I enjoyed watching that video and I think I have to try that

I have one of those Farberware rotisseries put away that I haven't used in probably 20 years. I also have one that fits on the top of my cooktop that I have never used. I guess I thought they would be a lot of trouble especially when I can walk to Kroger at the end of the street and buy one but they are so salty to me. Since I do enjoy the process I will have to give this a try. I think it would be a great rainy weekend activity.

I have never seen one like she had that fit in the oven. What really got my attention about this video is how she violated almost every rule of kitchen etiquette when dealing with raw chicken. Goes to show what I have always said. I'm still alive after not always following the rules we hear today. When she grabbed that frig handle without washing her hands I chuckled to myself and thought have we gone too far with the rules we are told to follow today?

Thank you, Tom. I finally have an answer.

I wonder why Thermador didn't do what everyone else was doing? Maybe they figured a separate unit would be easier to repair and replace.

I was really hoping, though, that this was a general-use appliance. It’s too bad it’s not. But now that I know who made it, I might be able to find one and see if I can rig it to fit in my own oven. It seems like that might be possible.

La Julia and the chickens!!

All through that series, in B&W and in living color, La Julia slings those chickens around the kitchen without a care in the world. I love it!
