Wow! That Pretty Much Covers It!
Been splashing about out there in Facebook World and had to stop by the good old appliance club. Glad I could put together as many Oxydol commercials as possible in one convenient thread. Be of good Cheer and stay safe. (Wait!...Okay then...I'll let somebody else write a Cheer Detergent thread if desired.) Still enjoying my collected washer demos and classic commercials as a whole.--Laundry Shark

Tom, I thought the same thing.
Have been buying Oxydol at Dollar General, powdered version. It still smells the same and cleans as well as I remember. It's very good soap.

My grandmother kept a box of Oxydol in the cabinet, but only used it for certain laundry tasks. Most often, it was for whitening & soaking crocheted table cloths, doilies, etc. She used to pin and block the smaller pieces, spray them with starch, etc. but the Oxy kept them white without harsher chlorine bleaching.

I've never tried Oxydol.
Which of the scents smells like the original?
If I'm going to try it, I'd like to get as much of the "old days" experience as possible.

Hi Barry!
Think the Meadow Fresh smells about as close to the original as I remember. The powder works waaaaaay better than the liquid, which you can find at WalMart, but I also have a T/L SQ and powders do seem to clean better for this type of washer, in general. Found the powder at Dollar General in the dollar aisle. I was willing to take a chance for only a dollar, and I was surprised!! Have not tried the powder in a cooler temp wash though, since I'm using it with whites in hot water. After clothes are dried there is a slight fragrance but it's good. Rinse water runs fairly clear so I'm not needing to 2nd rinse. My Mom used Tide and Oxydol religiously 50 years ago. Felt like I stepped back in time!! Hope this helps.

In its time, Oxydol was a premium priced detergent, probably because of the oxygen bleach. I still remember how good it smelled. I used to sniff detergents while mom grocery shopped. Oxydol ads soon evolved into showing the folded white towels on top of a washer, showing the finished product at the end of wash day, instead of showing the actual washing which is why the early 50s ad with the AMP Maytag was so unique. I wish someone could rediscover those wonderful fragrances from those years.

I remember the Tide smell from 1981. Insisted on using it.

Both Tide With Bleach and Oxydol coexisted for a while; then P&G decided to slim down and the latter was sold to Redox (sp?) brands. That group was made up of former P&G executives or something, with a first Proctor and Gamble still making Oxydol. They stopped that and formula changed because obviously P&G wasn't giving others use of or information on their patents and other proprietary information.
Oxydol was first P&G detergent with oxygen bleach, but then Tide with bleach was introduced with an activated oxygen bleaching system. One *thinks* this was tried/developed first for Oxydol, but as time went on P&G concentrated more on TWB which was natural since that was and still is their top selling laundry detergent.
