I've never gotten HBO but I got hooked on the series OZ when the first season appeared on the Costco shelves a few years back. Then I heard that some shoppers complained that the DVD they got of "The Wizard of Oz" turned out to be a definitely not G rated drama about the seamier side of prison life.

Anyway, the rest of the series (years 1-6) collections popped up at Costco recently, at only $12/year, so I snapped them up, and have been watching them ever since.

I have to say, though, that it can be a bit mind altering. I can't say depressing, as much as twisted. The human behavior depicted is so unrelentingly negative - everyone scheming, exploiting, plotting, double-crossing, cheating, assaulting, raping, murdering or just being sociopathic for the fun of it. Still, it's a riveting drama and I have two seasons to go... I just have to remind myself that the world outside of such a fictional prison isn't quite so grim.

The first forum-type website I ever visited was dedicated to OZ. I hung out mostly at the 'Beecher vs. Keller' thread, which went wildly off-topic, most of the time. It was a great site, but those of us who were there from the start got tired of the inevitable in-fighting that can crop up.

Anyway, I loved that series!

I'd have to say the writing is generally top notch, although some of the situations, as seasons 3 and 4 progressed, were a bit hard to believe - like sticking a bunch of illegal chinese immigrants in the middle of Em City on bunk beds. But perhaps there was a real-life situation similar to that.

It's too bad the major networks generally can't muster the same quality of writing. LOST is an exception, generally very well written. And 30 Rock is pretty good for a fast paced screwball sitcom (I don't think Tina Fey could do a bad show even if she tried).

Elliott

Christopher Meloni, who plays Elliott on "Law and Order" was on a few of the episodes of "Oz" stark naked and is quite endowed,I must say.On one seen,he is standing facing forward in his cell and hung like a race horse. I was having a beer and almost got it all over my coffee table.I mean the beer.He is deffinately one hot hunk!

Ditto on the Chris Meloni...wowzers I wish I had been Rita Moreno to see that in person! I think my legs would have given out from under me and I would have dropped to my knees. Dahlink it would have been Heels to Heaven with that one!

I LOVE OZ!!!!

I got so hooked on that show. Very entertaining and all the frontal male nudity was an added plus! It seemed like just about all of the men they showed frontal naked were well endowed lol. With cute tushes too! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, well, maybe not that much *wink*. And if you haven't seen it already, which I'm sure you have, you should watch Queer As Folk. Very good also.

"Queer as Folk"

was another show I liked partly due to the scenery but mostly due to the stories.I heard that most of the actors who portraid the 'Queer Folk" are straight??? I wonder what sort of "straight acting" it took behind the scenes!!!Enquiring minds want to know!!

I liked Oz for the great display of male attributes as well as the drama itself.

QAF, on the other hand, I found trite and predictable, downright corny in its writing and premises. I stopped watching during the final season and never did see the finale. By that time it had become completely unrealistic to me.

I don't recall that much frontal nudity in the first two seasons, but it definitely seemed to increase in frequency and totality after that.

It would seem the most dangerous place in OZ is the showers. Something like half the murders seem to take place there.

Laundromat

It's been confirmed that Randy Harrison (Justin), Peter Paige (Emmett), Robert Gant (Ben), Jack Wetherall (Uncle Vic) have come out and said they are gay, Thea Gill (Lindsay) has confirmed she's bisexual and the rest of the cast have stated that they are straight, but have for the most part avoided public discussion of their orientation. The others didn't come out until the show ended so not to distract from their characters. This is quoting the Wikipedia website about the show.

Well, I finally finished all the episodes, thru the end of season six. Always a bit surprising, although in the last episode I could pretty much predict what various key players were going to do.

It's been so long, however, since I watched the first two seasons, I'm starting over viewing them... and maybe some of the later seasons since it's possible I dozed off in a few, or accidentally skipped an episode or two.

And in case I get bored with that, I picked up a five pack of film noir movies over the weekend... stuff like Asphalt Jungle... which I've never seen.

I'm also looking for any DVD's of the Miss Sally Show... lol...

Interesting. I've never had the desire to own a lot of movies or shows. I own a couple, but once I see it unless it clicks with me, I have no desire to see it again. Netflix works well for me, as does the Showtime package on D.

To each his own.

I like being able to view an old movie or series multiple times, over time. Sometimes one sees a lot more with multiple viewings. And they are handy if one is laid up or snowed in...

I found OZ to be kind of predictable in some respects. But it was always a draw for the skin (and sometimes much more) factor.

I like to re-watch old movies. I can't believe I'm lumping it into such a category, but I came across "2001: A Space Odyssey" last night and picked up some stuff that I hadn't before. Truly a great film even if it missed the mark regarding where space travel would have been 8 years ago. And that AT&T would still be the old Bell System.

I think Kubrick, like many science fiction writers, didn't take the finite aspects of energy into consideration when they predicted future trends.

In some ways the world is far more advanced than "2001" predicted - such as in the realm of miniaturization and data communications (the Internet, for example).

There's one line from "2001" that I like to repeat from time to time. It's sort of a tongue twister: "Open the pod bay doors, Hal". Try saying it three times fast...

;-)
