We used to have one of those machines in the early 60's. As I recall, my dad wasn't too fond of it as he was always having to fiddle with it, usually with the water level switch in the lid. Somewhere in a box of goodies, I still have a set of mercury switches from it with the Maytag logo etched in the glass. That was over 50 years ago. It was paired with an RCA Whirlpool dryer that had a tendency to throw a belt every now and then. I think the dryer lasted well into the late 70's.
