This pair is out here in California in Palm Springs. The original Craigslist ad didn't have any photos, so I got in touch with the seller and he sent these along. The cabinets on both machines are in great shape, and both machines were being used weekly by the original owners until last year. The only real flaw the washer has, and it's a big one, is the inner tub is shot and will need to be replaced. However, replacements are still available from donor machines. Certain newer stacked Maytag washer/dryer units used the same size inner tub, so they are out there if you're willing to look around a bit. He says he has an offer from someone in the Palm Dessert area for $200.00, but he didn't care for the guys attitude and would prefer to sell to someone else. Here's the Craigslist ad and a photo of the pair that Kevin brightened up for me.[this post was last edited: 4/18/2013-01:46]

So that's it. A rare set in a rare color. Inner tubs are still out there so don't let that stop you if you're interested. The seller wants them gone and seems like a descent fellow in the various conversations I've had with him. His name is Jeff. I hope someone here will be able to get them.

Those are pretty!

I know there's a yellow pair of these in a house nearby, the owner has been going to clean out her aunt's house and call me to pick them up for over a year now. She's slow moving, but still plugging away... I'll post them here when and if she ever does call me, I have no need for more Maytags...

IF anyone out of the area is seriously interested in these, I could pick them up and hold them until you can arrange shipping.

(I think I might be able to squeeze in 2 more...)

Just let me know.

Geez, never realized there was a copper accent on the dial--must be beautiful.

But you guys are such perfectionists--JOHN. LOL. That tub wouldn't bother me at all; there is NO rust, which would be the only thing that would scare me away, unless the metal were worn through and leaking.

What a beautiful set. It'll be exciting when someone here gets them.

It's interesting how the 142 and 641 gradually evolved.

If you look at the 1958 A142 Tim got in March last year, it has the striped glass panels, the copper accent around the dial and a copper tinted lint filter assembly. It also has a different style two piece lid with a tub light inside it, and the early style badge on the front panel.

This pink set was made in 1959 and still has the striped glass panels, the copper accents(it looks like the lint filter is copper colored as well), and the early style badge on the front panel. But the top panel and lid (along with the tub light) have been updated to the newer style found on the 700 series machines.

The pink set I brought down from Spokane for Kevin was made in 1960, and apart from the little disc at the center of each dial, the copper accents are gone. His set also has the 700 series glass installed in the control panels, a tub light in the usual place, and the later round medallions on the front panels.

So in a sense, the 142 and 641 didn't come to an abrupt end, but gradually evolved into their 700 series counterparts until there was little left to do but change the name.

There was a VERY rapid evolution from the 1957 AMP 640 to the Helical 641 which still used the mercury lid switches and a diaphragm float on the agitator and then the 642 and its subsequent 2 revisions. The original 642 used a pressure switch for the water level but maintained a two-piece lid and a mercury switch in the lid as the safety switch. The 642 Revised eliminated this and went to the mechanical lid switch. Finally, sometime in 1959 the 642B was introduced that included the "timed" bleach dispenser. So in about 2 years, there were pretty much 3 revisions to this machine!

Another way of looking at this would be to say that three revisions were made to the machine over a two year period. I call that that gradual, so I guess were going to disagree here Mark. We simply have different definitions of what "gradual" is. But I won't let that bother me if you won't.

And by the way, I'd love to get my hands on a copy of the earlier washer parts catalog that covers the AMP machines and the A142. It has a dark green cover. I know you've got quite a bit of literature, which means you're probably pretty good at tracking it down. So if you should ever happen to come across one of these I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

$800.00 for the pair?

He told me he was hoping to get $700.00 for all three, meaning the washer, dryer and the fridge. I told him I thought his best bet for getting them sold was to separate the fridge from the Maytag's and he seemed open to that. But then today he tried to get Marty interested in all three. I'm sure he'd prefer to sell all three at once and be done with it, but that isn't likely to happen, though who knows. He may get lucky. My advice to anyone interested is to just be polite, and be patient. If the machines don't sell as a group he'll come around. Just don't burn any bridges in the mean time.
