I went to Holy Thursday service with my sister tonight. It was nowhere near as dramatic as it was when I was a kid. The altar boys - and now girls - have it way too easy: You have not lived until you've walked backwards through a church, across a shiny, slippery floor, in a floor length robe, swinging a heavy incense carrier loaded with hot coals and pungent incense, LOL. My parents said that I would reek of incense for days afterwards.

But it was a nice, homey thing to do. Haven't been to a Holy Thursday in twenty years. Missed the old latin hymns though. The new stuff is too choir-centric, and the congregation didn't seem to know any of the songs. Too bad, as I like to sing.

In my parish, too many people complained of use of incense due to asthma so the Rector made a home made thurible (incense burner) where there is a platform on the bottom and a container filled with denatured alcohol with a wick. Above it is a vessel filled with water and pure frankencense. The Rector calls it "aroma therapy" and no output of smoke, just a small output of steam aroma therapy. No complaints from the congregation. I will be swinging it tomorrow at the
Easter Vigil.

My church is blessed with very good acoustics, its a smallish room seating about 250, but its VERY live! 60 people singing sound like 600!
The downside is our organ, a Rodgers electronic thing from about 1967 that is little more than sound thru the speakers. As dreadful as it is, the people sing to it, often totally burying it, which is not bad I suppose!
We are beginning the process of replacing the organ, I am hoping it will be with pipes.
As a sometimes Church organist I feel there are few things finer than a good pipe organ, and a room full of people to sing to it!
I'll be on the organ bench some on Sunday morning, playing hymns during comminion so our regular organist can go recieve the sacrement. I'm looking forward to it!
 
I feel like I am "on tour"

My sister and I have another mass to perform tonite, she says it feels like we are recording artists on tour. Participating in this music ministry makes us better musicians and we're not bored since we have something to do during that time. All these services are moving so I have been very emotional during all this time. Our church is an older one with a Pipe organ, when a low note is played you can feel it.

Westyslantfront keep doing the laundry for your church, you really want the white vestments white. Another church I used to go to have the altar boy vestments kinda dingy. I told one of the older women I was with that they needed the Atlantis washer that had a "Turbo Rinse System to keep white clothes white". Then she started on how her boys were altar boys and she used a wringer to wash those robes to "get the cassock really white". Are wringer washers more aggressive?
 
Our Holy Week:

Polylingual Mass on Holy Thursday, English and Spanish language choirs singing together in English, Spanish AND Tagalog.

English Good Friday Service.

Holy Saturday off (another choir is providing music for Easter Vigil).

English Mass tomorrow (Sunday) at 10:30 am.

Holy insanity comes close to describing it. :)

LAWD have mercy. Drove from Connecticut to Pennsylvania yesterday to see my family.

The gossip, the complaints the negativity, the egos and the mother pitting one sibling against the other is getting to be a bit of a tired routine.

I'm gonna be a good little fairy and shut my hole today for the sake of a smooth day. But when the timing is right! WHAMMO! Sing it girls..Enough is enough I cant go on no mo' no....
