Periscope dryer vent..........DONE

Arrived 4 days after ordering it. Box has Maytag/Whirlpool logo on it but hey, a vent is a vent right?

I screwed up and ordered one that is too long. It will extend to 18 inches I thought I would rather have too much (see the pix) sticking out than be short a few.

It periscopes to any angle which was oh so nice as the SQ outlet was about 1 inch below the center of the vent going through the wall.

2 clamps are included to keep things fastened properly. As many of you know, duct tape is indispensable in life and I used two wraps on the part going outdoors to create a semi permanent attachment. I say semi because you never know when I will get a new SQ dryer.................. one end is tapered, the other fits nicely on the SQ outlet pipe. No issues there.

Anyway hooked it all up, saved the old elbows "just in case". I do not notice any leakage and the velocity on the outside seems same as before. I will find out for sure when I dry a load and see if the window fogs up or not.

I thought you would have trimmed the pipe at the wall to make this as flush as possible.....just an idea...

this one has a neat setup/slide feature to it.....

but I lack tin snips and was too busy to go get a pair. At least I gained some space back and the whole setup does not look as wonky as when I first moved in.

Condenser dryers will eliminate the oddity of the vent pipe being in a dumb position...

In my mind, the darn thing is way too low to the ground. I would have preferred it up about 2 feet or so this way snow cannot pile up against it. Also move it over to the right a bit. I guess he averaged it out and picked that spot. I'll have to watch the open window in the summer lest I suck in humid dryer air! At least it will be scented with A&H dryer sheets in outdoor fresh scent.

that is the bad part of having a dryer in the living quarters so the speak....it can blow out your conditioned air......

some laundry room setups allow for an open window for a enclosed small room, so only that room would exchange outside air.....not everyone is this fortunate...and some don't realize this has a big impact on conditioned air...

I am fortunate to have a room that can be shut off from the rest of the house, and open a window to exchange the air, without killing my central air during the summer....

most vents going outside are thin tin, I use simple kitchen shears to cut right through it......you will get back to it when you get time.....it does look nice, a clean cut look...

Have never seen one of these periscope vents. Do you have to clean out accumulations of lint from time to time?

I checked out the website. the stuff looks interesting and certainly makes for a better look. I can see how it would hold up better long-term. However... whoever writes their ad copy needs to cut waaaaaaayyyyyy back on the used car salesman lingo and the scare tactics. The scare tactics ignore the main point, which is that most people do not install their
own dryers and therefore whatever the duct material is, it is what 'experts' and 'professionals' decided it needed to be. Personally, I find those tactics rather offensive.

I understand that the verbiage has no connection with the quality of the products and that it was probably written by someone who knew little or nothing about them.

New Dryer Vent

Hi Ben, It would be best to cut the pipe coming out of the wall flush with the dry-wall and use two 4" elbows and a short section of 4" aluminum vent pipe. tape all connections except the one on the dryer and the one where it connects into wall.

 

The rectangular telescoping vent thing you installed put a lot more back pressure on the dryer and also leaks a lot of humid air, heat and lint in the house and the lint gets pulled back into the dryer causing more problems with the dryer. These extendable vent things also get filled with lint more quickly.
