Presumably the question is regards to Whirlpool.
Gentle is essentially the same sequence as Normal but at low speed and shorter. No sprays in the final spin.
There were a few variations on Perm Press (and sometimes differences between Whirlpool and Kenmore). Commonly it runs 6 mins of the wash at high speed, then 4 mins at low (start at 4 mins for delicate Perm Press items). The wash is followed by a double cool down sequence ... which is a partial drain (until the water level pressure switch resets), a brief pause for remainder of the drain increment, refill with cold water, agitate two mins (usually low speed), then repeat to make it double. Followed by a full drain, spin (low speed) with sprays, agitated rinse (usually high speed), and final spin (low speed). Some later machines/timers changed it to a single cool down for purpose of conserving water.
Knits is a merging of Gentle and Perm Press. 8 mins maximum wash time at low speed, a single cool down sequence, full drain, spin/sprays, agitated rinse, final spin.
Super Wash, is a lead-in option on Normal (for 5-cycle machines) and Perm Press (on 6-cycle machines). Prewash of 6 (or 4 or 2) mins. Partial drain, brief pause, then refill and continue with Normal or Perm Press.
ETA: Right, as Launderess says ... Super Wash has a 2-min soak, then the partial drain. I believe the premise was to pause so heavy soil can settle, and then drain away.[this post was last edited: 11/11/2016-16:35]
