After hearing so much about Persil I've decided to finally order some and try it (Merry Christmas to me). I'm planning on ordering from the Miele website to get the German version (which seems to be preferred over the UK version). Is there a better place to order from? Also, which version is it that has the scent everyone loves so much? And would I be fine to just order the regular version, or should I use the Megaperls Colour if I'm going to use it on dark laundry?

As written elsewhere, one should not use normal Persil on dark coloured or non-colourfast laundry, as the activated bleaching agents will cause fading with repeated use.

Persil for colours is rather more scented than normal Persil, but the formula may have changed since the last time one "sniffed" Persil colours several years ago.

Miele USA seems to offer the best price on Persil products, but some other vendors offer free shipping with a certian amount that may make it cheaper to order from them.

Megaperls is nothing more than a concentrated version of Persil detergents. One just needs to use less than when using say Persil powder. Either way do not go by the dosages on the Persil containers, which are for European consumers with hard water. You'll need to experiment with smaller amounts until you find the correct amount of Persil for your laundry needs.

Megaperls Colour

I sell this in my store and personally use it for my colors and I LOVE it. My clothes come out smelling clean and crisp, and they even feel different than when I washed with run of the mill grocery store detergent. I use the regular Megaperls on my whites and the Perwoll Black Magic on my blacks. I have a top loader washer and I only use about a tablespoon or two of the detergent. When I first took this stuff on, I thought $43 for detergent was outrageous (and I still am not quite over it), but it lasts a LONG time.

However, I am a vacuum expert, not a detergent expert like a lot of the people on here, so I can't really give detailed information as far as comparisons with other detergents.

As far as ordering, I think the price is pretty much the same everywhere. You may want to do a search on Miele's website to see if there is a dealer near you.

Laundress and Andy, thank you! I appreciate the dosing suggestions. Knowing I can cut way back on the recommended amount and stretch the number of uses in each box makes the price tag a little easier to accept.

Miele's website lists a local Miele distributor that supposedly carries Persil products, but I think they're a contractor-only establishment. I'll phone them and see if walk-ins are welcome.

Oh, no, Persil for colors still packs a mean punch fragrance-wise, but I love it.

Even in my top-loader, I use only a quarter of the recommended scoop. Yes, it is more costly than Cheer, but Cheer is all bubble and no wand....

I LOVE the scent and performance of the liquid Persil color gel (it is blue). Almost like "Cool Water" cologne, by Davidoff...

When you hear folks rhapsodizing about the smell of Persil, they are usually referring to the Persil classic powder that comes in an "El Tremendo"-sized box. It's not to be used on colors, and really works best in hot water. Supposedly there is some sort of rosemary essential extract in it, but to me, it just smells fresh and bracing, like whisking over a snowy slope on a ski lift's chair and taking a deep breath....

Just use a little. You can always add more...

My detergent stash is already ridiculously huge, so I see no reason at this point to start being sensible about my purchases. It's a little too late for that. That said, a box each of regular Persil and Megaperls Colour sounds like it should suit all of my needs. Er, laundry needs, that is.

They are extremely high-quality products.

Then again, so is Tide....if it works for you and you love it, I think the amounts used can justify the higher cost...

Another place I've seen them much more inexpensively is a Sephardic-Israeli food importer in Brooklyn that sells Persil in thick bags....seems to be the same formula and fragrance as the German product. I'm told that the Indian and Pilipino food stores in my nabe also carry it on occasion, but I haven't had time to check it out yet...

Miele's markup is ridiculous (but it gives me an excuse to snoop at the vacs in the store, anyway!)

I agree with you Scott; the markup must be tremendous. $46 for a box of detergent? Yikes! Oh well, I could spend more than that on a fancy dinner and have nothing to show for it the next day. At least with the Persil when the detergent is all used up I'll still have the empty box to play with. Ooops, I wasn't supposed to admit that. Nevermind. :)

I looked around online before I placed my order with Miele, and there doesn't seem to be much variance in pricing between different sites. Amazon is a little less expensive if one orders a case of 3 boxes, but I think I'll make sure I like the stuff before I commit to spending $138 (choke, cough) on detergent.

Gave up on Persil after the first year or so, (took that long to finish one of the uber sized boxes), as I felt it cleaned no better than Tide HE or by the Wisk tabs which just came on the market. Being as this may, nabbed a case of Persil Sensitive for about $30 plus shipping, so my stash grows yet again. I'm telling you, when I go to the great laundry room in the sky, there is going to be the mother of all laundry appliance/product estate sale! *LOL*

Wow, $30!

How many boxes in a case?

(I happen to like the Persil Sensitive product, as it has a mild fragrance.)

Yes, I know, I had to install closets!

You may also be able to order Persil from Basco here in Port

I go to Basco and get my Persil unless I happen to be going to Seattle( like I am next week) and then I order it with Lisa, who has it waiting for me when I walk in.She is Fabulous!! Then there is no shipping either( us Oregonians do not pay tax in Seattle with a driver's licnece) Basco is at NW 14th and Davis, plus is a gorgious place to check out all of the new toys in their native envirements, they have two floors of kitchens to admire.Just a thought:)

Ritchie- Basco is the dealer that comes up on Miele's website. I've been in there once, but thought one had to have a contractor's license to purchase there. So they sell Persil products to the public? I ordered two boxes from Miele's website and shipping was only about $9, so for now I'm happy, but in future if I can buy it at Basco I'll definitely consider it. (I must admit, I do love getting UPS packages, though.)

Where do you purchase Persil in Seattle? I'm up there often enough that I'd consider buying it there, too.

I see nothing wrong with being extravagant when it comes to detergents. I don't use my Persil often, but occasionally I love that scent of fresh rosemary. I'm also liking the spendy box of SA8 I just purchased.

Some people spend $5000 on a watch; others don't mind dropping $50 on a special box of detergent.

When you factor in the cost of expensive clothing, linens, etc. saved from the trash bin by using a premium detergent against stains, yellowing, etc., it actually is not an extravagance at all....

I DO confess to using effective, inexpensive detergents like Ajax liquid, Gain, Kirkland, etc., on loads that don't require intensive deep cleaning to stretch the budget.

Does the SA8 powder still come packaged in a plastic sack surrounded by a cardboard box? (I'm seriously considering ordering a carton....)

The only costly detergent I was very disappointed in was Shaklee. I've never tried Melaleuca because I've been told it is extremely high-sudsing, which could get ugly with my soft water...

Scott-- SA8 still comes in a bag-in-a-box. I transfer all my detergents to tall Rubbermaid containers with airtight lids and keep them stacked up in the cupboard over my washer.

David-- Of course, that mode of thought tends to keep me in debt up to my earlobes, but ces la vie, right? LOL.

Scott, I think you're bang-on about expensive clothing and taking care of it. And some items might be more sentimental than valuable, like heirloom linens handed down through the family. I shall rationalize my Persil purchase as a sensible choice necessary for the upkeep of my wardrobe investment. (Hmmm, did that come off as believable?)

Now Eugene, let's talk about that $5000 watch you mentioned. What logic must we come up with to rationalize that purchase?
