Has anyone else noticed the Hotpoint WM52 First Edition Washer in Phil Mitchell's kitchen on EastEnders. It has a brown coloured control panel but it has a white door, i'm sure it should be brown.

It sounds different too! In Previous episodes when it was in use, it sounds like the Laundrette washing machines that Dot runs!
I don't think it actually works, and they are using just sound recordings, hence the reason it has different door.

It was quite a good episode tonight for washer viewing, also on show was Tanya's machine. I'm sure it was a Ariston or one of the very last Ariston looking Hotpoint First Editions.

Didn't the Hotpoint WMs of that era with Graphite fascias have white doors? That always seemed a bit odd to me. Maybe some of those White First Editions with the Brown fascia were given the same treatment? Perhaps it was only Almond-bodied machines that had the brown door to match...or had they dropped Almond by that point? Can't totally remember the brochure.

The WM52 came in white and almond. My grandma still has the almond version. I don't believe there was ever a brown facia version with a white door.

Your correct Chris, I'm gonna switch it around now to Emmerdale. Debbie Dingles Indesit washer, have you noticed the obvious cover up of the brand name on the front of the machine.

Speaking of Dot Cotton

That laundrette must reek of Capstan's as well as every customer's service wash. *LOL*

Our local PBS switched systems so we no longer are able to watch EastEnders. Episodes shown here are so far behind what is on in the UK. Last few one saw they were up to where Phil had nicked his daughter from her mother in (South Africa?), Pat's husband had just died and left her with nothing and the prat of a son chucked her out of her own home.

Optima...

I don't watch Emmerdale. It's too much like watching a fly on the wall documentary of where I live.

Until 1996 or so, Emmerdale was filmed about 5 minutes away from my parents house at Esholt. The original Woolpack is my Mum's partners local.

And if anybody ever watched "Where The Heart Is" on ITV, my childhood house and first school were both featured that show. I recall them filming winter scenes in the middle of summer and they had to put fake snow all over the roads and roof of the school. One shot during these scenes was on the road that ran behind our house. Hilariously, they didn't bother putting the fake snow in the distance and you could see all our washing hanging out on the line in the background.

chris, funny story!

A funny story Chris!

Yes, I noticed that too, optima you beat me to making a thread on it!

Anyway, on this episode on the link, my comment is there so click on the time and that's when it makes an appearance. Ben doesn't actually close the door fully, but it starts!

Also, what powder is that?

washing machines on EastEnders

@optima I'm sure the Hoover Six washing machine is still in the Vic, it seemed to survive the Vic fire alongside the oven as it's still there in Alfie and Kat's kitchen.

So Max and Tanya still have their washing machine (I saw it once before in 2008) however their dishwasher seems to have disappeared from their kitchen. First they had the Indesit, which was changed for a Kenwood dishwasher (found in Currys) now there's a cupboard in its place. I'm sure there are dishwashers in Ians house, and what is now Janine's house (built in models), and Kim's Palace has a white Beko dishwasher (before the B&B fire they had a Silver Beko washing machine), I also saw a white Beko washing machine in the boxing gym.

Launderess,

Your way behind on EastEnders, maybe as much as 3 Years & I'm getting a bit worried because most of the households now seem to have Washing Machines. I would hate to see the classic EastEnders Launderette close down. I would miss seeing all of the soap powder boxes on show.

Albert Square

One has always had a soft spot for those "two up, two down" houses along Albert Sq in Eastenders. While not exactly suited to hosting one's candlelight suppers they are charming in their own way.

Am wondering if those homes in real life would have had clotheslines out back to hang washing if not a wash house. Or, if before the kitchens were fitted with mod cons was there a copper and a spot for washtubs/mangles.

WM-series with Graphite panels and White doors,

This was actually available as a colour option on the 1997 WM range apart from the First Editions. It was an option for those who preferred the classic colour combo but really was a Polar white machine with a Graphite (then Zircon Silver) panel. This colour option was called Mercury and its rarely seen.

James.

Houses on Albert Sq.

Launderess, the answer to whether the housing stock of Albert Square would have had clotheslines and coppers is pretty definitely yes! They're all typical Victorian fodder seen up and down towns of Great Britain. Most likely there would have been some kind of scullery on the back of the kitchen at the rear (and possibly the outside loo), many of which may have been reconfigured as bathrooms in later years.

I live in a house not dissimilar and you can still see the evidence of the pulley for the washing line in the garden - the line was pulled up to catch the breeze; in some places lines end up as high as the second floor windows!

The side return (the gap running alongside the back of the house by the kitchen, usually about as wide as the hall at the front) is a marvellous place for a line in the winter: clothes dry quite well - even overnight - without being so affected by the moisture out in the main garden due to the warmth of the house. It's also a boon as a shadier spot for dark clothes. Indeed, you can see a clothes line through the kitchen window of one of the Albert Sq. homes in a similar arrangement!

@hotpointfan

Its not a Hotpoint noise though, that's the thing.
Its a sound recording of a laundrette machine.
When they show the laundrette they play the same sound recording, and Ian Beales washer, same sound recording again. Plus hotpoints don't start tumbling straight away like that, they spend about 1 minute ish filling. Tanya's is the only one that I think works properly, but even then, doesn't sound like a proper Hotpoint.

Dots Laundrette:
It could well close, because they all have washing machines now, who needs a laundrette? Its not appeared in any recent episodes, as that was Heather's job, but since she has died, you rarely see clips of it, as Dot don't seem to be around as much either.
