Just got this in. Want to do a full restore. I have never seen a system like this though. What is the solenoid for?

I'm not saying this is ever going to happen, but everytime I see one of those things I'm reminded of the stories some of the "seasoned" repair guys would tell me about something going wrong and "the door would fall off the hinges and onto the lady's foot." I was a kid and thought it was pretty funny. They ask a fortune for those Philcos on ebay.

Obviously it is hot gas defrost. I feel so stupid. I forgot how innovative they used to be.
Yes, these fridges kill stupid people. I love it. They were taken out of production because they killed/injured children (Personally I blame the parents). Any seasoned pro who gets crushed by one of these doors has it coming. I like death and opening a fridge to be linked together.
Fully restored, these babies are 5-6 thousand. Americans love anything that is inherently dangerous.
But, feelings aside, I got a guy willing to pay a lot of money for the chance to be killed by a magnificent appliance. I am amped up! This fridge personifies America, probably why they are worth so much.

It appears to be original, I have never seen one this color. I love the turquoise/gold interior. The usual is pink/silver. The only odd thing is no butter conditioner...
Wow! Cadet Blue!! Sadly this was not a TOL model for GE, so there wouldn't have been a butter conditioner, alas.

The V handle Philco was produced for four years 1953-1956. The 53-54 was first design (like yours Matt). 55-56 was second design. I picked up a 56 a few years ago for free. It runs great but is rough. As you can see the freezer door is missing and the breaker strip around the freezer box is broken and missing. This same fridge was produced with a conventional one way opening door. I would like to find a complete one to replace the missing parts on the V handle.
