1960 PHILCO DUO-MATIC

Cool ad thanks for posting it. This is the exact machine I have in the electric vented model. The dispenser system that this machine has and Tom was describing was made by Controls Corporation of America. The same system was used on the 1960 LKM top loading washer to store and dispense liquid detergent and fabric softener. On the LKM at least they had the good sense not to use this system for LCB.  And even though the reservoir is sealed I can still imagination the corrosive damage that storing a 1/2 gallon of LCB inside a machine could do, the GE washers with LCB storage turned into a big rusty mess. Fortunately on our Duo-Matic it doesn't look like the LCB dispenser was ever used, and in fact the entire machine is in almost perfect shape.

I believe that these two machines were the only two to make use of this clever way of storing, measuring and dispensing liquid laundry additives.

I think it wouldn't hurt if someone posted close up pictures of the Duomatic's control panel.. I think someone on this forum has one of these machines.

The only modern washer I know which dispenses detergent automatically from a reseviour (sp?) are the TOL GE Front loaders... no automatic bleach dispenser though.

I have to admit that if I was in the market for appliance shopping in 1960, that Bendix would certainly be on the candidate list. :)

Laundromat Shirt Ripping

OK.. I'm now curious after watching that...

Using an inflation calculator, $100 in 1975 would be equal to $420.50 today. (In US dollars)

If someone in a laundromat came up to me and offered $400 to rip one of my shirts in half, my question to them would be, "How many more would you like to rip in half?"
