Philco Front Load Washer in Rhinelander WI

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

That’s not going to last long.

If someone is ambitious enough to take on a (most likely) big project with unobtanium parts.

I have never seen a Philco FL without the soap chute in the middle of the top panel. That machine looks like our Philco Hi Speed Duomatic minus the three buttons for the dryer settings. They stopped making laundry appliances in 1969 or 70.

I hate to say it

But I believe this is a dryer not a front load washer.

My brother Jeff saw one of these on the curb one day and we came home that evening grabbed the truck drove all the way across town to grab it because we thought it was a combo and it actually turned out to be a dryer. We left it there, Philco dryers in this time were unbelievably miserable machines.

It has a different badge at left of the timer than the 1966 DE6G8, although the console is labeled Custom Imperial and Three Speed.  The drum speed presumably doesn't change (per the spec sheet above) but the speed selector provides High Air (170 CFM), Low Air (130 CFM) airflow rates, and a third position Reverse Tumble (for bulky items) that switches between the two airflow rates every 4-1/2 minutes with the drum reversing each time ... so the motor apparently runs one direction for 170 CFM, reverses for 130 CFM?

A messy paste-up of photos I saved years ago ...

Our nextdoor neighbors had a yellow early-mid '60s Philco set.  Their glassed-in service porch was at the end of the house and faced ours.  There was a large deteriorated sunken garden in their yard that provided distance, but my bedroom took a direct hit from the dryer that made a chirping/ squeaking noise within months of installation and for many years afterward.

1960s Philco dryers

I’ve only ever had a direct experience with about four of these dryers, and they left nothing to be desired. That’s for sure they tend to be noisy and slow, although it would be a very unique dryer, and I would love to see what you could do with it Ben, It might be fun if you put enough effort into it it might even be able to be turned into a great dryer by using some other parts for it from more successful dryer designs.
