Philco V-Handle Cold Control

Dear All,

I have been a member for some time but not posted in a while, so long that my email had changed and I had to re-join. Thanks for having me back.

The True Zone plate on my '53 Philco is icing up regularly, and it is not defrosting itself at all now. I am guessing the cold control is bad? Can someone tell me how to replace it, especially without breaking the control cover or those plastic pins that secure it? Any help is much appreciated!

Philco Cycle Defrost Refrigerator

Hi Rex, the cold plate in the back of the ref defrosts every time the compressor shuts off, and when the compressor shuts off the CC is supposed to keep the compressor off till the cold plate warms up to about 36F to allow the ice to melt completely.

 

So you could have a bad CC, or the sealed system could be low on Freon or the compressor could be losing capacity.

 

Is the compressor still shutting off regularly ? What are the temperatures in the freezer and ref sections ?

I'll bet the freezer is super cold. Which means low freon or weak compressor.

Thanks to you both for this reply. I have had this refrigerator as my main unit for many years now, and it worked perfectly until the last year or so. It does seem to me that the compressor is cycling off, at times at least, and I have it set just a fraction beyond the point where the compressor turns on. When I defrost the unit manually, the Cold Zone plate frosts over quickly and stays that way. I think before I could give accurate information on the temperatures, I would have to defrost everything.

I will say that I have noticed no difference in the operation of the freezer in terms of icing up more or sooner, but it does seem odd that the unit maintains a cold temperature when it is just barely on.

I am not sure what my next step should be? Thanks for your suggestions!
