Picked up a Miele dishwasher!

Today I went and got a Miele G 572 dishwasher, same place as I got the oven and cooktop last week. I'm curious as to how old it is. I found a manual for it in the archives of Miele.com, but whenever I try to download it, it tells me there is a connection problem (there isn't).

How does the salt thingy work? I've never had a dishwasher with a softener.

Basically hard water flow into the machine, through a special resin that swaps the 'hard' magnesium and calcium ions for 'soft' sodium ions.

After a time, this process slows down as the sodium ions get used up. So salty (sodium rich) water is passed over the resin, effectively recharging it.

The salt is added by the user, via a special port on the machine. The frequency of filling depends upon the softner setting. Sophisticated modern machines have sensors that recharge the resin only when necessary, lasting months. Cheaper machines went through more salt more often; in some cases a month.

Dishwasher salt must ONLY be used. DO NOT use table/cooking salt, as it has iron impurities and anti-caking agents that can destroy the resin over time.

I got a Miele G560 some time ago, and the salt think fu***d ut the whole machine. I removed the big container in the bottom, and connected the hoses direct on the tub. Worked like a dream. My grandmother have the machine now, and she love it. Especially the touch control. Not bad to be a 1984 mod.

With the water softener make sure that you fill the reservoir first with water. Then fill with dishwasher salt...you can go to a Miele dealer and they should have the salt. It comes in a blue box. The reservoir will hold a good amount and I would say about half the box. Then you have to find out how hard your water is. On the inside wall of the dishwasher on the right side is a dial. Its under a plastic cover and you pry that off and set the dial...3 is if your water is kinda soft. 2 is medium Water and 1 is hard and 0 is really hard. The manual will tell you the range since I dont have it off the top of my head.
Also with the water softener you wont need as much detergent. If you use Tabs you do not need softener since the Tabs already have salt in them. If you water is already soft you can disable the softener. The manual will tell you how. Once you get it going you are going to love it.
