Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

That's about the same vintage as the set our next door neighbors had.  Theirs was yellow and the dryer had a round window.  I sort of remember the large cycle numbers.  The dryer started making a chirping noise that continued for many years until they finally replaced both machines.  There was space the size of a separate lot between our house and theirs.  Their service porch faced my room.  I can still hear that dryer running like it was yesterday.

This model seemed to be the most common one I used to find in the field of washers and dryers I used to work out of. It is very limited as far as cycles and even selected the speed each one used. It does have a variable water level though. Some of this model machine actually had the light up console. Most of the Philco machines were very limiting as far as combinations of water temp or speed for some reason. They were that way right up until the end. In 1958 when they first started making this type of Philco washer, they were much more versatile in the way of speed and temp combinations, so I don't know why they chose to limit their cycles like that later. Otasco sold both Leonard(re badged Kelvinators) and Philco until they quit making both.

Picked it up this morning, it was on the curb, house seemed very neglected. I told the owner I'd see if I can get it working again and asked for a story behind the machine. All I got was, he found it when he was cleaning out the garage. Maybe I'll take a look at it in a few months or pass it along.
