This year is the 1st year we have had this problem. All of a sudden we have a large of amount of these birds landing and sleeping on our deck at the beach. We are on the 10th floor, and every morning they leave their deposits where they sleep. I was literally pushing them off with my foot last night through the railing. They just wait for me to do that. They just look at you like whats the problem, then fly off as my foot nudges them. Other buildings tried the fake owls and they get used to that. Tried aluminum foil attached to tables and chairs and they get used to that. Don't live here full time so for 3 days a week they have full landing rights. Would like some ideas on how to keeps them away while we are gone and here. Any suggestions?

CDs

Just hang as many CDs with strings around the perimeter of the deck as you can stand. They work like a miracle!

Not that it's going to help, but when I lived and worked in San Francisco the I. Magnin & Company building was designed to be "pigeon-proof". The building is still there, sadly now a much lower-class Macy's.

I have seen a number of bird repellent items on Amazon. Maybe one will work for you, just check to make sure it's returnable. And of course if you are fortunate enough to have a place at the beach (it's currently 112 outside)...count your blessings.

Thanks so much all. I have been looking at the ultrasonic devices and I may order 1 of those to put on the deck. Have to laugh at some of the replies, some great ideas and some others I can only dream about lol. I have read they don't like some strong spices and water sprayed on them. Was thinking of getting some squirt guns and filling them with cinnamon and water and shooting them with that. Maybe they will get the hint when they smell like a coffee cake and the others either go after them or are banished from the flock.

off topic

Some of those ultrasonic things I can actually hear!  Maybe I'm a mutant or something.  One night at the lake I kept hearing this high pitched barely audible squeaking.....yep it was a bat!  And I could hear him!  No lie!

Rats with wings

Our neighbor's house has those double overhanging gables that the pigeons love.  They have put up the netting, spikes, and fake predators and they still hang around.

The spraying worked. I filled a large cleaning plastic spray bottle with cinnamon and water, about 3 tbs to about 3 cups water. Adjusted to stream spray and got 3 of them. They took off and have not been back for a couple of days now. Maybe they took the hint. I still see them flying around the building and going to other decks but avoiding mine for now.

The Library's buildings use electrified wires on all ledges. There are two courses, about 6 inches apart so if they get the idea to perch on one wire, when their rear quarter settle, they get blasted. I have seen places use those strips with spikes and the birds fill the spaces between the spikes with straw to make a damn sofa for themselves. They are native cliff dwellers so buildings attract them.

I wonder if a light oil with cayenne pepper mixed in would irritate their feet if you applied it to the areas where they perch. Maybe you could just put vinegar in your squirt gun. Don't waste cinnamon. Knight's Spray Nine in water would remove the waterproofing from their feathers. They might find that irritating.
