Is that rust inside the dishwasher or did someone drain a swamp through that thing? ooooooooh, what a shame. I was starting to breather quite heavily over that dishwasher.

It's probably iron deposits on the porcelain tank. Without an iron filter in the water supply, the use of chlorinated dishwasher detergents would really make the iron precipitate onto the tank. That would be almost total porcelain failure to have the steel underneath be that exposed and rusty. They probably never ran it through a cycle with citric acid to remove the iron stains.
