Does anyone know why some plastic items (usually containers and not drinkware) come out of the dishwasher with white etched and damaged spots? Is it too much / too little detergent or heat, or just bad kharma?

I think most of the etching is caused by putting these items in the microwave.
Yes... microwave.
But it also depends what you are heating in the container. If it has a fatty sauce or gravy, or fatty meats, those tend to get much hotter. If they are against the container, that is what causes the white "etching".
