If I am not mistaken, Gentle Annie uses a SmartDrive type of motor, but it (the first models, at least) is belt-drive instead of direct-drive.

i think that the motor is different. isnt it mounted on the outer bowl?

all the gentle annies were belt driven. The direct drive came with the smart drive

Gentle Annies have belt drive but the motor uses similar technology to the smart drive - it is a stepper motor. The motor is sourced form the USA, not sure of the manufacturer but I can check as I have a couple in the shed. My mother has one which I restored and gave her, she loves it, hasn't shut up about it in about five years.
