I usually don't use softener but occasionally do for certain things.
I don't like too much scent.

A former housemate left behind some Snuggle, and even at 1/2 dose it is way too foul and perfumey. My bottle of Target softener (4 yrs old?) is about to run out.

Depends on the flavor of the Snuggle and the concentration. I really liked the Snuggle Exhilarations Peach Blossom and Sunshine, but they discontinued it (you may find some at Big Lots). I'm now on to Sweet Blossom and Pomegranate. There is also a new one with a very dark label that smells promising. All of these are very light in the wash, but then I use only a half dose.

The "ecological" brands

like Ecover, et al, do have lighter scents than the mainstream brands.

For a mainstream brand, the Downy Free is about the only one out there (at least in THIS neck of the woods.) It softens well, too.

I blame it all on the Suavitel effect!

I used Ecover last winter on bath towels. (About the only time I use softener.) While I didn't like the particular scent--although I didn't hate it, either--it was wonderfully mild and faded quickly. Unlike a Very Major Brand liquid detergent I tried a few years ago that had a scent strong enough to warp the lid of the washer and lasted longer dried than a preservative loaded Twinkie stored under perfect conditions.

I'm using a brand called Bright Green. It has a very light lavendar scent that doesn't really stay on the clothes very long. Mainly use the softener to cut down on the static electricity since it is so dry out here. I buy it at Vons, part of the Safeway chain. It may be one of their store type brands, though perhaps other chains may carry it as well.
