This machine would do about everything you would ever need. Only thing I would change is the agitator. I would drop a spiral Activator and Mini-Basket in it and be happy as a clam.
I always thought the GE 18 lb. tub was kind of on the small side. Doesn't appear to hold much more than a standard-tub does. Irregardless, a very good washer IMO.

I've always like the ramped agitator better, too. GE machines from this period had the fastest agitation I'd seen. I was surprised when videos of mid-to-late '50s GE washers popped up; the agitation speed was significantly slower. The Mini-Basket was all sorts of fun to watch.

My parents replaced the '57 Norge set with a '63 or '64 GE washer and "Premier" gas dryer that matched. Back then GE would not put their name on gas appliances apparently. They were V12 models and although the tub on the washer was significantly bigger than the Norge was, it was small by today's standard. It did have the mini basket. The dryer was about average size I think. The Norge dryer drum was probably bigger. The washer was pretty good, the dryer not so much. The motor had the tendency to overheat before finishing the load and kick off until it cooled down after it was out of warranty of course, so we suffered with the dryer until I got old enough to work on machines and they then had a succession of different machines until buying a Maytag set in the early 80's which they had until moving to a retirement village where the appliances were provided.[this post was last edited: 8/31/2017-12:55]
