These washers held the largest load of ANY top loader ever made and did the best job of washing the clothes and extracting the water too. If they had just been a little more durable as far as the water seals, they would have been even more terrific. The dryers had roller and air movement issues too unfortunately. All in all, pretty good machines compared to what was out there at the time.

Hey Norgeway, I was waiting for a rebuttal from you about the Frigidaire ad — we have to share that Norge/Wards had their 20-lb capacity machines that also did a great job and normal spin speed was pretty good compared to others on the market at the time...

I grew up with Frigidaires, I love them, I also like Kenmores Whirlpools GEs Kelvinators Philcos and most especially Westinghouse front loaders,,,the only washer I really DESPISE is a Maytag....I just like anything Norge because its kind of oddball , and I like different stuff.

These DID hold as much as anything ever made, the Norge rated at 20 pounds wasn't much different, I had a 1-18 once wish I still had it!

<span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #008000;">Those Custom Imperials were some of the last machines I remember that had a console light (hope I have the correct P.O.D.) . Whenever there was one at the "trough", the washer testing area in the shop, I'd always switch on the light. Lighted, they were really attractive. Interesting to note that way back then, a lot of appliances that needed something major were not repaired in the home. Refrigerators in particular that needed a compressor or an evaporator were brought in, then after repair were hooked up to a "clock" that tracked temperature and compressor operation over a 24 hour period. Washers were tested with a full load of clothes. I guess because of the disposable nature of today's major appliances (and in some cases designed for easier servicing) together with the cost of labor involved, shop repair is a rarity. Of course, most people would prefer in-home servicing, but the repair shop sure contributed to my happy childhood...and I got a little paycheck every week too

i continue to be amazed at the performance of the 1-18 i picked up in KC as few years ago, especially considering i think it was out of service for several years and didn't do any rebuild on it. The fact that i found that matching dryer a year later is just frosting on the cake!

The Old '76 here just plowed through a winter queen size comforter and a dog bed this morning while the '68 Rapidry worked on the sheets.
