Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Yep, the Viking washers were part Canadian GE, part Canadian Hotpoint.   Side opening lids with a mini-basket!

I had a set kinda like the one in today's POD, just one notch down (no programmed pushbuttons but the was Harvest Gold) - I sure miss that mini-basket...

But you have to remember that in 1974 Hotpoint was still making their own washers. The solid tub machines with the spiral agitator and filter/pump built into the agitator. That was what JCPenny sold for many years under the Penncrest name.

In Canada in the early 1970s,  a group called CAMCO merged production of GE, Hotpoint, McClary (POD Oct 6th by coincidence!) and Moffat appliances.  Economically, it made a great deal of sense - back then, there were duties and 'hidden taxes' on appliances and appliance parts that were built in the US and then imported. So the Canadian-built machines were different from their US-built counterparts (Canadian-built GE dishwashers featured porcelain tubs for much longer than US models, for example)  Consumers were happy to have the choice of brands at a reasonable prices but admittely, the machines were cookie-cutter clones.

CAMCO merged  with (or was acquired by) MABE at some point in the 90s, post NAFTA.  I believe the big plant in Montreal closed a few years ago, following the phasing out of the McClary and Moffat brands.
